Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 21Dec 06, 2010 2:11 pm Gas fittings are left hand threaded. This means that you have to turn the fitting the OTHER WAY to undo it. Think of how you screw a bottle lid ON, Thats how the gas fitting comes OFF. Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 22Dec 06, 2010 2:11 pm Also make sure the tap is off all the way. The ON/OFF tap is like normal, only the connector is left hand thread Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 24Dec 06, 2010 2:25 pm Just be sure that the fitting comes out and goes in easily, if there is any damage it will bind up and be tight to do up/undo. If there is damage you will have to re place the fittings with damage. Generally with fluid or Gas fitting, if there a couple of small notches in the fitting it will be left hand thread. Regular fitting do up by turning clockwise and undo by turning counter clock wise. Left hand fitting do up by turning counter clockwise and undo by turning clockwise. Also when you turn ON a tap you are actually undoing/opening the valve so they are OPEN=counter clockwise CLOSE=Clockwise I hope this helps Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 25Dec 06, 2010 2:54 pm I do believe I have..... changed my gas bottle! Thanks for all the help everybody. Now I've done it, I'm sure I will be able to do it again. BBQ tonight, woo hoo! I am very scared about the first time I use it after I've changed it, but we'll see. Thanks again! *If you don't hear from me tomorrow.... something might have gone very wrong. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 26Dec 06, 2010 3:07 pm You can check the connections by getting some mildly soapy water and dribbling it over the joints, with the gas bottle turned on(all burners off), if it bubbles, then you have a leak. Switch it off and tighten/check, repeat. If it continues to bubble, don't use it. A Tip, If you can't get the closest burner to the gas bottle to light, turn on the furthest away one and then light them in sequence to the closest. Once all are lit, turn them off one by one farthest to closest. Another tip is to remember to turn the bottle off first when you've finished cooking. This allows all of the gas to burn and remove possible air locks in the line Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 27Dec 06, 2010 3:23 pm Well done Joles!
