Also our son used a purposely made wall sticker (the type that can be removed and placed somewhere else) and that peeled off paint – 4.5 months after the painting was done. The flaking seems a lot worse around edges then middle of wall. When we asked the painter he said no tape or anything to be put on wall for 6 months - does anyone know if this is correct? Not sure if there was enough sealer on or didn’t bother with sealer around the edges of the room. Factors? * Low temps below 10 deg during day and night when painted * painted in the space of 3 days (our house size in around 270m2, 4x2, games etc) sealer x 1 coat, 2 x top coats * float and set plaster walls (think this is correct term) – plaster was approx 3-4 months old. * Dulux paint used Any ideas on whether we have a plaster problem or paint problem (or both!), Re: New paintwork chips, flakes fairly easily 2Nov 15, 2010 10:05 pm six months with no tape HMMMMMM nope I went outside once. Re: New paintwork chips, flakes fairly easily 3Nov 16, 2010 6:38 pm Do you have the left over sealer and paint cans? If so post up what the names of the products, I use to be a technical adviser for a paint company and lost count of how many "professional" painters used Wall Board Sealer" on set plaster, perhaps this has been used, for your sake I hope not. Re: New paintwork chips, flakes fairly easily 4Nov 16, 2010 11:18 pm Unfortunately we threw away the empty cans that were left. We can confirm the top coat was Dulux professional as we remember those cans. From memory he said he used a Wattyl oil based undercoat, as it is supposedly better than Dulux (we had asked for an oil based sealer to be used). We've never had newly painted walls from scratch so I suppose at this stage all we can do is take the painter's word a wait out the summer months to see if it improves, and if it doesn't try force the issue. By the way the paint job in our opinion was average - runs in a number of places, uneven finish, minimal patching of plasterwork (a lesson learnt for us to make the time for a proper inspection before handing over the cash...) Re: New paintwork chips, flakes fairly easily 5Dec 10, 2010 7:01 pm This sounds exactly like the problem that we are having. If it is, 6 months without tape will make no change. It's been 2 years now since we moved in, and we're still toiling our way through the building disputes tribunal and various tests trying to find an explanation.
Do the tape tests lift of bits of dusty residue? Or is the plaster smooth underneath? Is there any cracking or drumminess? From my knowledge, it could be any one or combination of the following: -too much lime in plaster makes the plaster soft -sealing the walls before the walls were dry. -insufficient amounts of sealer. -excessive suction of the float undercoat sucks the moisture out of the plaster when it's applied, preventing hardening -excessive use of plasticisers/ air entrainment agents in the float (eg. calair) creates bubbles in the float. This can cause two problems: (i) Excessive suction of the undercoat (as above) (ii) When the float coat is hosed down in preperation for the sking coat, the air entrainment agent is leached into the set coat, causing bubbles and weakness. -The plasterer may have finished the plastering with a skim coat containing excess lime which hasn't bonded to the plaster surface beneath. If you haven't sorted this problem out already, (and if you're in Perth) I can give you the names of some inspectors with experience in this field, Re: New paintwork chips, flakes fairly easily 6Dec 10, 2010 7:31 pm We have not sorted the problem and yes we live in Perth so any names of inspectors would be great. We have also since noticed in one room where the wall looks like it has lots of paint drips - they were not there before so wondering if the paint is now bubbling. We basically are of the thought that it is going to have to wait until we repaint in a few years time but would like to find out the problem if we can. Re: New paintwork chips, flakes fairly easily 7Dec 10, 2010 7:52 pm If the paint is coming off easily, I don't see how waiting 6 months would make any difference. I'm not an expert, but can't see how paint would bond any better as time passes. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: New paintwork chips, flakes fairly easily 8Feb 04, 2011 2:02 pm So we had the builders painter here fixing up some stuff after our 6 month maintenance and we asked him about the walls. Apparently the painter we hired thinned out the sealant too much and that is why it is flaking. Thank you all for your responses Re: New paintwork chips, flakes fairly easily 9Feb 08, 2011 1:03 am Hi Have you had your paint samples tested by Dulux? With our Solver paint job, our painter called the Solver rep to take samples for analysis. They measured the thicknesses of the paint and sealer to make sure they were okay. (This was for free). This way you can make sure that what the painter told you was correct, as there are many potential causes for the paint peeling symptom. Keep in mind that painters thin the sealer to make it penetrate the plaster more. We were told by numerous so called "experts" that our walls weren't properly sealed, and eventually found that the cause of paint failure was completely different. Re: New paintwork chips, flakes fairly easily 10Feb 09, 2011 11:07 pm We just had our house painted last week and when our floors were put in a couple of days ago, there were marks and gouges put in the walls (whole other issue with the floor installers) but the paint from those sections just peeled away...it comes off like nothing I've ever seen...not in dry flakes but soft and flexible bits... Is brand new paint supposed to do that? Just come off the wall in mushy pieces? How can we have ours evaluated as well? We're in the Perth area. The painter used Solver paints, not sure what sealer... Re: New paintwork chips, flakes fairly easily 12Feb 22, 2011 6:45 pm Its all in the preparation. Sounds like the surface in question was not sanded properly. Sanding the substrate gives the paint something to ke into. It should be de glossed or roughened up using sand paper or a sctoch pad. Paint wont stick to a shiny or new surface. Also should be degreased with at least metho Re: New paintwork chips, flakes fairly easily 13Feb 22, 2011 6:51 pm OR…paint was watered down too much???
