Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Sep 08, 2010 1:12 am Now that our power bills have increased, and will increase even more, I've been thinking about getting some info on skylights. Does anyone have any recommendations in the Sydney area? I'll probably get 2 or 3 - 2 downstairs and 1 upstairs. Maybe it will cut our electricity use down if we can turn off a few lights. Thanks. Judie Re: Looking for help with skylights 3Sep 08, 2010 8:26 am travelbug Won't you fall through the floor upstairs if you have skylights at you feet (for the downstairs)? Not if the roofs for the downstairs areas are not covered by the upper floor. Judie Re: Looking for help with skylights 4Sep 08, 2010 9:59 am Judie, just be aware that any gains you make by using less electricity for lighting will be lost by losing heat through the skylights in winter. I think you can get ones that have covers to counter this, but they are quite pricey. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. My parents have one in their lounge, which is great - except there's about 2 hours in the afternoon when it reflects on the TV and is impossible to watch it properly, even closing the curtains doesn't help! viewtopic.php?f=31&t=37229 - our Iris 4! Re: Looking for help with skylights 6Sep 08, 2010 8:23 pm I have a couple of skylights and during winter the light transfer is great however I find the heat transfer through them in summer is terrible. I use squares of thick coloured cardboard to place above the diffuser to save getting on the roof, as my neighbor does. Arfur Re: Looking for help with skylights 7Sep 08, 2010 9:34 pm Interesting, We've had a big skylight in our kitchen since we built the house many years ago and we still agree it's the best addition we ever made. Loads of light comes in and we really haven't noticed at all that the temperature goes up during summer. We're getting a couple of Solatubes in the new house we will be building. I'm sure they have offices in Sydney, maybe check them out? Will be in the kitchen area both to let in light as its in the middle of the room and also to allow the heat to escape in summer. At the moment we have a traditional skylight in our office and it does get very hot in summer. It is however on the western side of the house. Due to this though I'm going to getting automated blinds on the Velux's and the roof they will be on is East. Not sure if that helps or not - I'm probably in the same boat as you......slowly paddling up stream in the murky waters!!!!! Hi team, Im looking for a second hand sd4b monitor preferably white. 0 8923 Really tight at the top of the stairs- how to get furniture into those rooms? Study books - does anyone really use them these days? Large storage closet would be more functional. 2 6884 Hi, I am looking into doing a KDR in Melbourne and am contemplating using Kialla Homes. I am looking for feedback on them from others who have built with them. 0 13444 |
