The Jarrah roof timbers in my 1960s house are still in great condition. But that doesnt mean it can't get damaged by moisture or whiteants so if you've found some timber that is crumbling (not sure if this is what you mean by flaking) then get it inspected for whiteants. Jarrah can also rot if you've had water damage over a long time. But if by flaking you mean just splinter-y then that's normal Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15819 2 9384 This certainly doesn't look good.
