Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Nov 02, 2007 4:14 pm I intend to repaint the external facia boards (30 years old) to my home. In some areas the existing paint has peeled and the woodwork will require some sanding.

Give it a good sand back, an undercoat, then use a good weathergard topcoat, in gloss. ![]() Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: External facia board - repainting 3Nov 02, 2007 8:07 pm The fascia is probably Oregon which not used outdoors anymore due to its poor durability. Check that there is no rot beneath the flaking paint. Re: External facia board - repainting 5Nov 03, 2007 8:48 am Most of the external painting products these days do not require primer, even for bare timber.
Correct me if I am wrong, but you should be able to paint directly over it. Stay away from oil as I think it would bleed through the top coat of the paint. Re: External facia board - repainting 6Nov 05, 2007 12:10 pm Many thanks for the reponses. Comments about oiling are noted.
Yes - there is some rot in some of the facia ends which I will be replacing/ reinforcing. What is the pink undercoat that is evident on some of the existing facia? It reminds me of calamie lotion that my mother use to apply to mozzie bites when I was a young child Re: External facia board - repainting 7Nov 05, 2007 12:14 pm ((It reminds me of calamie lotion that my mother use to apply to mozzie bites when I was a young child))
![]() ![]() ![]() That’s "Primer".......sort of an undercoat. If the boards are in direct sunlight most of the day…..I would suggest using it again, then an undercoat, then the topcoat. I’m from the old school of painting when it comes to boards in full weather all the time!
