Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jun 06, 2010 12:21 am Hi hoping someone can give me some advise and options on how to lay T&G flooring over tiled floor. Ceiling height is the minimum. Options we have considered is to jackhammer rows of tiles out and lay battens down and nail flooring to these. Lay sheeting prior to flooring but this would probably be costly. Not keen on gluing to the tiles as a friend suggested. We are moving walls and relocating the kitchen so the tiles will not be over the entire floor surface probably 95% We want to keep the depth to a minimum so as not to reduce the height too much. We want to have real timber flooring not the fake crap. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Janine Re: Timber T&G flooring over tiled floor 2Jun 06, 2010 8:50 am Hmmmm, I don't think there is any other option other than what you already covered. Glueing onto tiles - even if you go ahead with that - I think only the slim timber can be glued (12-14mm). 19mm and thicker boards can't. Nailing onto plywood or battens even over tiles is possible I think, but that raises the floor level. Taking the tiles out would save some height as you said, but how hard would it be to take them out?? Parquetry - same as slim timber - has to be glued onto a stable flat surface. And there are the "real 100% timber" options. Engineered floating floors (top veneer timber)? Our friends had them installed over tiles (not sure if glued or floated). After some 5-7 years, they still look sooo good. Maybe an option to consider. My BH is saying that even if the floor deteriorates for some reason so it can't even be resanded, it can always be replaced ... so much headache with timber floors, maybe we should just do that. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15884 No, I even have sections of narrowness where the tiles won't slide up any further. When I manage some spare time, I might play around with the first DIY part of my… 7 4922 Thank you so much. We ended going with the terrain that’s part of our brick. 2 2499 |
