Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Apr 18, 2010 3:41 pm Hi all, I was hoping someone would have a suggestion for me! My gas hot water system was turned off for a while (end of tenancy, followed by renovations) and I can't get it going again. I'd really rather not fork out the moola for a plumber, but it looks like I might have to at the rate I'm going. So I called my gas company and has the gas reconnected a few weeks ago now. I've check the gas meter - turned the handle so gas is on. Then I followed the instructions on my hot water system (turned it off, left it for 5 mins, turned the switch to pilot, held it down and pressed the ignition switch numerous times). I've left it for an hour, gone back, tried again - rinse and repeat several times! Is there something special I need to do to get things going again when it's been off for a while?!?! Thanks in advance! I've just started writing a blog Re: Gas hot water system - help! 2Apr 18, 2010 5:09 pm Is the pilot light coming on at all?? Also - what brand is it? If the gas has been turned off for awhile, unfortunately it may just be an issue of drawing the gas back up the pipe (gas retracts in the cold, it doesn't just sit in the pipe) This means the instructions on the tank are correct, but you need to ignore the waiting times. Get the pilot to light, hold it down for 30 secs, let it go. What should happen is the pilot light should come on (because there is gas in the pipe) but will not stay on (because the pressure of gas in the pipe is not strong enough yet). If its been off for a while, you may need to repeat this for 10-20 minutes before it will come back on. If after this time, it still doesn't work - it's time to call a plumber GOOD LUCK!! ~W~ Building our forever home - Lilium Estate Clyde - Land due May 2019 Built our first home - Pakenham - 2011 Re: Gas hot water system - help! 3Apr 18, 2010 8:04 pm It's a Rheem and I don't think the pilot light is lighting whatsoever. Sounds like a plumber is needed... I've just started writing a blog Re: Gas hot water system - help! 4Apr 18, 2010 8:50 pm Yeah sorry hun. No pilot isn't a good start. Ring Rheem first though. Most manufacturers have a service call centre that might be able to walk you through, and then direct you to a local tradey that knows what they're doing. ~W~ Building our forever home - Lilium Estate Clyde - Land due May 2019 Built our first home - Pakenham - 2011 Re: Gas hot water system - help! 5Apr 19, 2010 9:24 am More than likely the ignition isnt working. Often the piezo ignition has been removed or the wire is broken. You can test this by pressing the ignition button and looking for a spark. No spark and its not working. If theres no spark, Do as you normally do, but instead of pressing the ignition, make a taper out of newspaper (under no circumstances use a candle)and light it and hold over the pilot light, while you have your finger on the button that you turn and press down. This, from your discription, if more than likely your problem. but as someone else suggested make sure the air has been expelled from the line. . If its simply been turned off, no problem as the line will still be charged with gas. Depending on your gas authority, they may have capped the line off at the meter, and when they have done this, air gets into the line. light a burner on the oven to expel this air, if this is the case. If the pilot still isnt lighting, you have a problem with either your unitrol control or theres a blockage on the pilot burner. More likely a blockage than the unitrol. If the pilot is lighting but going out after you take your finger off the button (after you have held it down for longer than thirty seconds) you have a problem with the thermocouple. the sun master is the solar heating to "warm" the water in the tank the S26 is your hot water system which will heat the water (25 degrees?) so with both turned on you… 2 14059 I want to build a decking to the drawn shape outlined in black.
