Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Apr 15, 2010 12:06 pm We are in the process of building built in wardrobes in our old 1940's house and the walls are currenlty horse hair plaster with picture rails etc. We want to replace the horse hair plaster walls as they are starting to get a ripped afefct and you can see the grain of the horse hair through the paint. Woudl you recommend simply nailing the new plasterboard over the top or should we rip it all out and start from scratch? Re: Cover or rip out Horse Hair Plaster 3Apr 16, 2010 11:44 am I agree and you would then have the option of instaling insulation in the walls for noise etc. Arfur Re: Cover or rip out Horse Hair Plaster 4Apr 16, 2010 12:45 pm I am no expert... but I have plastered and repaired walls in the old style. Unless the old stuff is coming off, it would be better, easier and cheaper to skim coat in a finishing plaster. This is not a small job, i would skim and leave unless you wanted to move walls/power/insulation anyway in which case you might consider it. Re: Cover or rip out Horse Hair Plaster 6Jun 15, 2010 3:16 pm I would recommend removing old gyprock, so you can straighten up new walls. Old houses often have uneven walls. If you put new gyprock on top it will be untidy – really a shame after you spent so much money. Replacing gyprock is also a good opportunity for small alterations – moving doors, creating openings (Just check with your council if your work is not to big to require DA). It also may be one of few opportunities to add or replace wall insulation. Also update your electrical wiring – old plaster usually hires old electrical wiring behind. You can more power points, light switches and add new cheaper. Re: Cover or rip out Horse Hair Plaster 7Jul 24, 2010 12:56 pm I agree. Depends on what "else" you wish to do to the room.
