Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Re: House painting - what to ask/process 3Aug 01, 2020 1:00 am Ol'Painting I’m a painter, but I do lot’s of interstate projects for my investment proeprties for which I’m hiring local painters. I got along a few bumps. Learn from my bad experience! Request in writing (apparently confirmation over the phone does not work!): • How many coats will be done and what type of paint will be used? (Eg. 1 coats of undercoat follow by 2 coats of finish for all bare surfaces) • What preparations will be done? • What warrantee the painter provides against faulty workmanship? Confirm this is actually a warrantee on their work, not a manufacturer’s warrantee on paint. You can read about good and bad painters warrantees here: http://ol-painting.blogspot.com/2010/06/what-is-painters-guarantee.html • Paint of which quality range will they use? You will have to check their drums of paint when they start painting. Do not settle for anything, but a premium quality (trader’s quality is a grade lower) from one of the main paint manufacturer’s. The brand is not as important – paints within this quality range are very similar, all are excellent, and have 10 years manufacturer’s warrantee). You can read more about it here: http://ol-painting.blogspot.com/2010/06/what-is-paint-manufacturer-warrantee.html#links • Check that painter is licenced and insured; • Confirm they will clean up after themselves, will remove all rubbish; • Exact date and finish of the job (weather permits); • Ask you friends for reference. Or call Real Estate agent you bought propoerty from and ask for recomendation. Mention agent's name when you call painter - they will be more motivated. • And last, but not least - make sure that you are generally comfortable with the personality of a painter. If it someone you can’t communicate easily with – it’s not good for you. hi, the post is fairly old but valid. thank you for your advises. Is it generally cheaper to buy your own paint to offer to painters? I realise they get a bit of margin on that, but I am on super tight budget . Is there any other way to save, i.e. prepping/masking, cleaning after? Re: House painting - what to ask/process 4Aug 01, 2020 1:54 am Zero VOC paints are the best. Not all popular brands like Dulux, Taubman etc. have zero VOC paints in their range (low VOC is not zero VOC). Rockcote, Ecolor and Volvox are the brands that have zero VOC paints in their range. A good question to ask if your painter is applying a primer before painting. Masking is a must. It is always better if painter supplies their own paint, in that case they won't be able to blame you saying that you have supplied bad/defective paint. I was discussing the topic of a primer with owners builders, and they wondered why do we need a primer on gyprock, as they are already smooth and have paper-like cover. What are your thoughts?
