Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Mar 04, 2010 9:56 pm Hi all, I am hoping someone can shed some light on this, as the council website and their call centre could not! I have a small (~7sq m) back deck which is partially covered by a deck roof. The front end comes to a point and is exposed to the weather, so it is pretty rotten. I want to repair/replace the deck and while I am at it, square the front off and get the deck roof to cover the entire deck. Would I need a permit or get it approved by a building certifier? I have looked on the council websites, but all they talk about is building new structures, not repairing existing ones. Oh - and some salient details I'm in Brissie, and the house is in a character listed area and on a small plot, so those restrictions also apply (deck in the back though, so character restrictions shouldn't apply) Any ideas? Thanks for the help! Re: Repairing/Replacing deck & deck roof - need Council perm 2Mar 06, 2010 6:08 am At the old place I renovated last year the neighbours did similar to you . I complained to council as the new awning blocked light on a chunk of my garden and it looked ugly . Was advised that as he had an existing structure up that him repairing or replacing it did not require council approval or neighbours consultation . That was Blacktown Council . Others may be different. I suggest you book an appointment and talk to them direct . I've just built 3 stairs off a landing out the back and been told by the private certifier I need hand rails sorry tried to attach a pic but couldn't mine don't have sides… 5 5708 2 8357 Yes, get a builder, make sure he is experienced and a registered building practitioner 5 8959 |
