Well just a thought For a minute there, I thought Onc was into weird satanic rituals centred around killing sheep. Re: SINCE WHEN DOES STAINLESS STEEL RUST ?? 24Feb 12, 2010 8:53 pm Lanolin is a byproduct of shearing sheep ( washing the wool actually) Hmm - ask the sheep that question and you might get a different answer re the stainless - 316 is the best to use - especially within a few km's of salt water. and don't clean it with anything that has "iron" in it. Re: SINCE WHEN DOES STAINLESS STEEL RUST ?? 25Feb 12, 2010 9:56 pm No salt spray where we are, so no idea what else constitutes 'harsh' conditions Have washed it down with 3m scourer & soapy water. A lot of the stains came off BUT a lot remained. What next ? For outdoors in any envirnoment 316 stainless steel is the best solution. Even my outdoor up and down lights that are 304 will corrode and get whiteish stains on them. My 316 stainless fan looks like it did the day it was installed. Perhaps wiping it down now and again with some type of oil. Re: SINCE WHEN DOES STAINLESS STEEL RUST ?? 27Feb 13, 2010 6:32 pm This is the blurb on the website, which I don't recall seeing when I bought it a year ago - but that could very well be my pathetic memory : Manufactured from high quality 304 grade stainless steel and supplied in a polished finish this mailbox is in a class of affordability not seen before. Stainless steel is not impervious to surface contamination and should be washed and cleaned regularly. In certain conditions it is beneficial to use a commercially available stainless steel cleaner or polish, these can give a thin protective film to the stainless to help preserve the finish. In harsh environments (such as coastal salt spray) 316 stainless steel is generally recommended. If you intend to install one of these mailboxes in "harsh" conditions extra care and maintenance may be required. So it seems to me they're covering themselves for manufacturing a mail box in a poor quality s/s Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: SINCE WHEN DOES STAINLESS STEEL RUST ?? 29Feb 13, 2010 8:14 pm .....but we don't live in 'harsh' conditions I would understand needing 316, if we lived near the sea The result is that we need to clean it regularly & also polish it as well. Nothing else we can do about it Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: SINCE WHEN DOES STAINLESS STEEL RUST ?? 30Feb 13, 2010 8:16 pm Cleaning and polishing just reveals more bare metal... Re: SINCE WHEN DOES STAINLESS STEEL RUST ?? 32Mar 18, 2010 12:20 pm Anywhere it rains with the possibility of clouds or wind coming from an ocean will kill 304 grade s/s rather fast - as you have noticed. If you lived in Mudgee it would last longer. 316 is used on boats for a very good reason and the cost goes up accordingly. You need 316 or change to galvanised. Lanotec http://www.lanotec.com.au/ is a great product and I use it liberally on my boat trailer and other soft metal stuff but it looks like a light brown stain has been sprayed on and remains tacky so it will get grimey with whatever air borne particles stick to it. There are some quality polishes around but your problem is you ordered the wrong s/s and you will be in constant maintenance mode trying to stave off the inevitable. Re: SINCE WHEN DOES STAINLESS STEEL RUST ?? 33Mar 18, 2010 2:43 pm yep & it makes me cranky that we wasted the money on it, thinking it would outlast other materials & be low maintenance. Ha!
