My house, built in 1918, has an original tiled roof which is not surprisingly leaking in a few places. I wondered if I could have some tiles replaced and the some of the ridge capping repaired? what are approximate costs for this or a new roof? I think also some of the tile battens need replacing as they are sagging.
The house is small (2 bedder) I estimate about 70sqm for the ceiling space.

I heard somewhere that most tile roofs need replacement at some point. Since yours is more nearly a 100 years are you going to replace the whole roof? Is it better to replace the whole roof at the same time or should you opt for replacing a few tiles as and when needed? Curious because a friend of mine is going for tile roofing and since I stumbled on this thread I thought I might clarify a few things with a person who has had experience with them.

Sounds like your roof trusses have sagged. you will need to remove tiles and re truss/block where sagging has occured. Use a string line to determine where drop is.\Some second hand builders yards may have your tiles. Terra Cotta was the usual tile for this era and in my experience after a little searching you can find such an item. Take one of your original tiles as a sample

The hard part is going to be finding matching tiles, even finding tiles of the same profile of that age is going to be really difficult, but if this is seriously the original roof then it's time to replace. once the tiles get brittle they'll just keep on breaking and you won't be able to keep finding enough replacement tiles to keep up. every time someone goes up on the roof, a few will break, a bad hail storm, some more will break and on it goes. It really is overdue for a new tile job and some fixing up.
