Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jan 14, 2010 8:18 pm Hi All, Our house has tiled floors throughout. It's now almost 2 years since we moved in and we've decided that before next Winter we want to put carpet in the 3 bedrooms and Lounge to increase the comfort a little more and reduce the energy consumption on heating. Questions/problems: 1. Do we need to remove the floor tiles before carpet can be put down? 2. The lounge room has tile skirtings. Instead of the usual timber they've gone and stuck 100mm tile edging around the bottom of the walls. How can we remove this and replace with timber, without having to replaster the entire room? Looking forward to your solutions/ideas and suggestions. Many thanks Re: Carpet laying dilemma 2Jan 14, 2010 8:31 pm I'm certainly no flooring expert, but I would imagine that the tiles would need to be removed before laying carpet, otherwise the height of those floors being re-covered would be a fair bit higher than the remaining tiles, once you add underlay and the carpet on top. As far as the tile border goes, I have no idea. Maybe they would just 'chip off' the wall, leaving the plaster in perfect condition. Or maybe that's wishful thinking!! Re: Carpet laying dilemma 3Jan 14, 2010 8:39 pm Thanks Bobbin. I meant to add that we have checked with one carpet installer and he reckons it'll be fine to go over and the edges wouldn't look much higher. Thing is he could just be telling us that to get our business. Sorry if I'm being sceptical about that but I don't want it to look crap. My thoughts exactly on the tile edging. The wife has been insisting we get someone in to remove them but she doesn't understand that it'll be pot luck if you can remove them without any damage to the walls. I'm about to put down some Merbau. Is it necessary to oil underneath the boards before laying? 0 2617 Hey There. No problems re jumping in. My original question was "should I have waterproofed" the concrete slab before putting batons down. We have been told we should… 7 4877 1 16301 |
