Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Nov 19, 2009 6:20 pm Hello I was hoping somebody may be able to help me try and suggest some likely causes for the reason the paint is cracking on our walls. It has been suggested to me that the hardwall plaster underneath is too soft. Any superficial knocks result in a big paint chip and damage to the hard wall. How hard is hardwall supposed too be? There are fine hairline cracks in the paint throughout our house(built 2005). Some areas the paint is falling off these cracks. Here is a (bad) pic of some cracks but gives an idea. If the edges of the paint are showing signs of curling up,( at the damage point ) then I figure there is a sure sign of a weakend plaster. Have there been any other issues with other houses built at about the same time? Maybe do a door knock at the same builder, built homes Sounds like a long shot, but a sure way to meet your neighbours Good luck! Onc Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Paint cracking? 5Dec 11, 2009 1:35 pm I have seen the damage and is mostly like blisters no cracking as such. I figure a very soft set. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Paint cracking? 6Dec 13, 2009 12:25 pm is there an area on the wall where its more prominate then other area's , for instance along the centre of the wall, gyprock sheets are jointed along the centre etc, if its the setting compound used by the plasterer's it will be prominate along the middle of the wall about stomoch height., sometimes theres alot of powder from sanding the topping left on the walls and its not untypical that paint has been applied straight over a layer of dust, thus causing the paint to film a harder surface that hasnt adhereed corrected to the plasterboard, however this isnt usually an issue if wallboard sealers used as it soaks into the said powder/board. This is alittle unusual. Re: Paint cracking? 7Dec 13, 2009 2:05 pm Nah it is hard wall plastered The only gyprock is the ceiling... Also the only place not to have a problem. Re: Paint cracking? 8Dec 09, 2010 8:36 pm Possible causes: -Hot weather during set coat application causes the plaster to dry too fast, and crack -Moisture ingress (eg. rising damp, leaking roofs etc) If there is no moisture ingress, then there are are many plaster hardening products you can use - just google them. I believe Zinsser products have been highly recommended, although I haven't tried them myself. 1 6558 Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7073 Thank you. That is really helpful. Once we get the place done and passed for OC we can upgrade in the future once we get back on our feet and not paying mortgage and rent. 4 5700 |
