Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Oct 23, 2009 9:05 pm Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned but I like fisholene. Yes it stinks but it penetrates better than converters I've used. Once I used converter and a bit of rust chipped off after and it was dry rust underneath. Fisholene seems to get down deep and soak into the rust crevices. I'm painting steel patio and am tossing up whether to use rust converter or not. A friend said he used fisholene and the rust came back???? I 've never had that problem. Any advice welcomed. Re: Fisholene vs Rust Coverter 2Oct 24, 2009 5:23 pm Fisholene is more of a preventative measure, not a treatment. Rust converter is for treating existing rust Re: Fisholene vs Rust Coverter 3Oct 24, 2009 7:07 pm This from the Wattyl site; Description: This semi-drying fish oil based product helps prevent rust and corrosion on iron and steel. Wattyl Killrust Fishoilene will creep into crevices and penetrate rust, displacing moisture and air, which are the two main causes of corrosion. It is recommended for the coating of badly rusted (greater then 5% rust spots) roofing iron as a means of prolonging the life of the iron. Fishoilene is an anticorrosive protective fluid for rusted steel where normal surface preparation is difficult. INTENDED USES – INTERIOR/EXTERIOR • Severely rusted surfaces, i.e. exhaust, mufflers and under mudguards • Badly corroded galvanized iron • Waterproofing of canvas, cars, trucks, trailers and farm implements This from a car enthusiast site; i once sanded a car, used converter, then kill rust, it came through again within months. killrust is a worthless product, its just paint! So anyway I got onto penetrol called the manufacturer and used it, it is the most effective product i have seen. So I did a test 2 yrs ago. I have an old boat trailer, the rust is flaking right through the metal, you know when the metal completly thickens up, its the worst kind of rust. I did no prep and just painted it right on and thats it. 2 yrs later in full weather i cant see any rust coming through. So now all I do is paint on penetrol and then top coat with anything and thats it. BTW dont use the clear penetrol use the aluminium one, it has microscopic flakes of aluminium and layers the metal with it. There is a similar product called ormonds silver shield and now because this stuff is so good I have noticed dulux has followed with one. And finally this little beauty from another website; What makes rust? Ordinary paint and primers "bridge" over the small imperfections found on any metal surface. Under this "bridge" air is trapped. Air contains moisture and this mixture of oxygen and hydrogen forms iron-hydroxide i.e. rust. Take one of them away and you eliminate rust. Under a microscope rust looks like a sponge full of air. Penetrol, due to its low surface tension will penetrate all the way through this sponge driving out the air and moisture and completely saturate the rust right down to the unattacked iron or steel. It has literally taken away the "food" rust needs to form and, by turning the existing rust into a protective coating, further rust formation is stopped and the paint is assured of 100% contact with the metal surface, the most important requirement for effective metal protection. Penetrol works and that's why it is used and recommended by people working in the roughest environment of all, the world's major shipping companies. Use Penetrol on structural steel, cast and wrought iron, wire fences, cars, trucks and trailers, corrugated iron, garden tools, tanks and anything made from ferrous or non-ferrous metal. Penetrol flows easily into crevices, welding seams, pipe joints and other areas that are hard to reach by brush, such as the inside of car doors. Remember: If you can't reach it - you can't fix it. Penetrol makes it easy to stop and prevent further rust This is how easy it is to use Penetrol. Just saturate the rusted surface with Penetrol until it has a shiny appearance. When dry, continue with any oil, alkyd or water based paint. The main thing to remember about treating rust is that if you can't reach all areas of all surfaces, you're ultimately wasting your time. THERE IS NO NEED TO REMOVE TIGHTLY BONDED RUST Penetrol makes it easy to restore corroded brass or copper and bring back lustre to chrome & aluminium Scrub surface with fine steel wool soaked with Penetrol to loosen corrosion and dirt. Wipe surface with a rag after 5 minutes, then polish with a soft cloth. I think I will get some penetrol....... Re: Fisholene vs Rust Coverter 4Oct 28, 2009 8:46 pm My trailer is telling me to tell you that ranex rust buster is (a rust converter) what made it feel much healthier The fisholene was used before I needed the ranex Re: Fisholene vs Rust Coverter 6Sep 29, 2010 3:53 pm I have 3 large structural C beams under house, 20 years old, with the original worn factory primer remaining (now patchy due to past sanding & surface rust repair). More recently, I've maintained it with rust converter and then fish oil (which didn't adhere that well over some of the remaining primer). It now looks like there might be some more rust returning. Can you use penetrol over a fishoiled surface? It's still sticky in some areas & would be difficult to sand. You’re on the right track, wire brush in a grinder then a zinc rich epoxy primer then a top coat of some sort, like a waterproofing membrane.
