Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Aug 12, 2009 11:47 am Hi All, Just bought a house and we are going to freshen up the paintwork on ceilings and walls. We'll be sticking with the same colours and the paint is in reasoable good condition. Do you reckon a sugar soap scrub and single coat would be enough to freshen it up? one room has a bit of mould on it(inside a BIR with solid doors) and the building inpector explained this was because it was a south facing wall with not much ventilation. There was no evidence of leaking or termites causing the dampness. His suggestion was some sugar soap and repaint. Is this enough to kill the mould? I will stick a dehumidifier in during the remainder of the wintermonths anyway. Jacob Re: repainting internal walls and ceilings 2Aug 12, 2009 4:42 pm you dont need to use sugar soap unless it's very dirty or greasy and it needs to be well rinsed off afterwards. If it's fairly clean then just brush the dust off the walls or use a vacuum cleaner. what is the mould growing on? you can usually just give it a good scrub with a cleaner and then spray with bleach, leave for a day or two and then rinse before painting. When we were renting a townhouse both we and our neighbours had problems with the cupboards on the southern side. For this and other reasons we came to suspect that the walls weren't insulated. No way of finding out for sure in a rental property. In your case though I would be inclined to make a hole and see what's inside, and if there is no insulation I would take the opportunity to put some in and replace the wall. Just gyprock sheet walls macy In your case though I would be inclined to make a hole and see what's inside, and if there is no insulation I would take the opportunity to put some in and replace the wall. Sounds like good advise (I am pretty sure it is not insulated) , but everytime you say yes when you think of something to do it cost money, which, after just buying a house, becomes increasingly rare in my wallet. Jack Re: repainting internal walls and ceilings 5Aug 27, 2009 1:51 pm Good preparation of the surface always pays off. I would use sugar soap, then rinse well, then paint. This is what I did through about half our house before we moved in. I used a mop to apply and old towels to rinse off. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: repainting internal walls and ceilings 6Sep 02, 2009 9:45 am RobertRaven Mold can be a very big problem if you do not take care of it. Simply covering up the mold with paint, is not going to help anything. It will be covered for a while but then will start pealing and get worse. It is better to take care of it before you start fixing up the house, that way you will not have to redo the place. Using bleach can kill the mold but that still did not solve the main problem; 'where did the mold come from'. I think you should try to figure out why the mold was there in the first place and then fix that situation. Without ripping apart the whole wall this is impossible to tell, but I have spoken to several people about this and the most likely culprit is.... South facing brick veneer wall with not enough ventilation (build in robes with no ventiltion in solid doors). I have treated it with mould killer (several applications) and painted it with anti mould paint to which I added anti mould (I believe it is called vc175). Next up is changing the BIR to allow for Ventilation. Further down the track the best solution would be to insulate the walls. I have since ripped the boards of the laundry and the bathroom and visited the roof cavity and am pretty please with the fact that I have not found one ******* piece of timber or evidence of a leaking roof. Always nice to find that the building inspection matches reality Jack Re: repainting internal walls and ceilings 7Oct 22, 2009 12:11 am few shots of exit mould from any supermarket for a few bucks will do away with the mould, just point spray and walk away dont try and wipe it away it will just dissapear. Painting is always a matter of sanding whatever is to be painted then dusting/cleaning so the surface is ready to do, dust and dirt in the paint will spoinl the finish result you want. Thanks mate. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive).
