Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jun 22, 2009 1:34 pm We've just started having heavy rains here in Perth and I noticed my entry door is getting hit with a lot of rain. I thought the eaves extended far enough to prevent this, but obviously not, plus the heavy winds are probably contributing to the problem. Can anyone suggest what I can do about this? We have a reasonable size porch but there are times when the wind blows the rain onto the door. The laundry door is just under the eaves so I'm sure it gets even wetter. Re: Entry door getting wet from rain 5Jun 30, 2009 12:07 am Both are a concern. I'm worried that the door will be ruined, and today we have had really bad storms here in Perth and although there is a seal at the bottom of the door, some rain did get through. I'm not sure if I should get some tall plants near the entry area, or perhaps have something erected? It might help to post pics/plans so we could visualise what you have to play around with. Do you have a weatherseal or a stormseal at the bottom (I think that's the right terminology)? We have a stormseal and no water gets in. The door is painted and has stood up to the weather pretty well but I think if it was a nice timber one I'd be more concerned. Re: Entry door getting wet from rain 7Jun 30, 2009 1:05 am You need to remember that anything facing SW through to NW and especially NW is going to get the prevailing weather. The strong cold fronts are always going to produce the result you are seeing, the last few days especially has seen sustained winds of around 60-80kmh and gusts way over 100kmh and no amount of shrubs are going to help with that. The wind will blow the rain straight in under the eaves anyway. You may want to think about a screen made of toughened glass or enclosing the entry area. That is about the only way your going to get a result. In those conditions no amount of seals are going to help. It will get in through the corners or somewhere where the wind forces the water through. Bloody wind, it's always windy Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ There is a house near the north part of Mullaloo beach that has had a glass screen erected around the entrance. My oldies had the front porch screened off as well. Glass would be a good go. pool fence mobs might be a good start. i guess you'll want to get every seal known to man first though. He's shown me some pictures, but they're all Colorbond roofs, I don't know if the addition would work on my house. This is the wind direction and strenght for your area in August. http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/climatology/windroses/wr15/wrgif/009021-3pmAug.gif Find other months wind direction here. http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/wind/selection_map.shtml As for the corrugated option - I wouldn't do it - it will be very out of character - try some trees a distance awy and the right height to make the wind and rain go up and over the house or to slow it down before it gets to the door.' Re: Entry door getting wet from rain 10Jun 30, 2009 10:27 pm That is what I told my brother also, I said it wouldn't look like because our roof is not Colourbond. The 'extension' he was referring to is not actually made of corrugated metal, it's a flat piece and it looks good on some houses (there were a few display homes that had it) but it would not suit my house, and he agreed it would look out of place. We are also thinking of enclosing that area but are worried about making it look too prison-like. For now we're putting some high shrubs there until we do something more permanent. I was wondering, what type of person would you be able to get out to advise on this type of problem and the possible solutions? Re: Entry door getting wet from rain 12Jun 30, 2009 11:03 pm That could work, but do you think it would look out of place at the front of a house? I suppose it would need posts to support it, sort of like a patio extension type of deal. I thought of shade sails, but again, that might look funny on the front of a house. No they don't come forward the same distance. The room on the left, which is the master bedroom, comes out further than the garage. Right now I haven't really got around to doing anything, busy moving! But my brother showed me a picture of a nice slatted panel type thing. Terrible description but with one of our large plants in front of it I think that would work and also provides a bit of extra privacy. Sooty's House - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19462 Re: Entry door getting wet from rain 19Jul 12, 2009 11:30 am Who deals with those things? Well every trade will have an answer in regard to what they specialise in. A Landscaper or Hort will say a hedge, a patio guy will say a patio, a builder will suggest moving the door or constructing an addition, if you know what I mean How about this... A narrow flat roof that extends out as far as a line from the corner of your garage. So that would be, what? Like 600mm by the look so visual impact is minimised. Have it in black colourbond and dark smokey laserlight. However that only gives some shelter but it is the horizontal rain being forced in by the strong gales that is causing your hassles. So what about then adding a waste to shoulder high glass pool fence to shield the door way but maintaining visibility and reducing visual impact. To dress it up, then have a nice clipped knee high hedge of correa or callistemon little john, or African box. Then you would approach the property entrance from near the garage door. It will look very classy and functional without getting anything complex.
