Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Dec 05, 2010 8:17 am I know how pathetic this is .... but I don't know how to change the gas bottle for the BBQ. I have a little bit of a fear about gas bottles and I've always just had my brtohers do it. But now I have to change one, and last time I tried I broke something and when I turned the gas on the hose came out and gas started leaking. I have a full bottle ready to go and a new BBQ since I broke the last one, but I'm not sure where I unscrew it (that's where the trouble happened last time), and to tell you the truth I'm actually quite scared of doing it. I've searched the internet, but I couldn't find any instructions on how to do it. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 2Dec 05, 2010 8:27 am Google isn't very helpful... I've found this, from a UK site (didn't think people in the UK knew how to bbq?) These instructions feature the basic principles of cylinder connection – please refer to the manual’s wording for details specific to your model of regulator. 1.First of all ensure that you are using an easy, clip-on regulator as opposed to the older regulators which required tools to be used. 2.Make sure that: Your regulator is switched to the ‘off’ or ‘disconnect’ position All taps on the barbecue are closed The hose pipe connecting to the barbecue is correctly fitted and securely in position. 3.Put the regulator on top of the cylinder valve and, placing your hand on top of the regulator, push directly downwards until you hear a click. 4.Once the regulator is fitted, switch to the ‘on’ position as indicated on the regulator Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 3Dec 05, 2010 8:30 am There's plenty of articles about converting LPG bbqs to natural gas... that probably doesn't help you today... Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 5Dec 05, 2010 8:34 am From http://www.lifestylebbqs.com/attachment ... s_rev2.pdf Most barbecues are made for LPG and are purchased with a portable gas cylinder. If this describes your situation, take note of the following: Check the gas label on the side of the barbecue. If it does not say "Propane Only", consult your retailer before proceeding. The minimum size cylinder you should use is 4kg. The maximum size is 9kg. Connect the hose to the barbecue: Use a spanner to tighten the hose to the barbecue inlet, which is found on the right side of the barbecue. Now connect the regulator end of the hose to the gas bottle. If you purchased a mobile trolley with your barbecue, hang your cylinder off the cylinder hook on the right side of the barbecue, and remember to keep the cylinder off the ground and upright at all times. Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 6Dec 05, 2010 8:36 am Yeah I know that's what I have to do.... but where does it unscrew. I see where the hose is, but somehow last time I unscrewed the wrong bit and broke the hose connection. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Here's instructions for a SMEG one, there's also an Electrolux one (who knew they did bbqs)... http://www.smegappliances.com.au/Docume ... nt_302.pdf Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 9Dec 05, 2010 11:34 am Just make sure that the screw thingy on the TOP of the bottle is turned OFF before you touch anything else-then the gas can't leak out Joles! Believe it or not, I did manage to do that part right. Bam Why not ask a neighbour joles?? Unfortunately we don't have many yet, none of the houses close to us are finished. The only ones we have are two blocks away and they aren't home. This is going to go down as idiot thread of the year isn't it. But I can't be the only one with a bit of a gas bottle phobia. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ See on this pic how there is the on/off tap at the top and then there is a hole where the pipe goes in? Then when I screwed it in to the new one and turned the gas on, the hose popped out and gas was whooshing out. I know where it goes, but it screws right up close, as close as it can go? One other time (years ago) I returned the bottle with an extra bit on it and by the time I realised it was gone. I just can't seem to see how close to screw out cos there's a few different little bits on the end of the hose. I'm actually quite stressed out about it, as I'm quite scared of it. This thread is just making me look more and more moronic .... forget the BBQ, I'm going to buy a roast chicken. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. This can be one of a couple of styles Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Top left is the hex nut with the left hand thread that is undone with a spanner. The other nut at the end of the hose should already be connected to the bbq, and won't need to be touched. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Or the regulator may have a handwheel or t screw that is suitable to be tightened by hand and will also have a rubber seal. Once re-connected it is best to check for leaks using a little bit of soapy water at the point you disconnected. Some people don't have time to do the job right the first time, but seem to have plenty of time to fix their mistakes. Build Thread Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 19Dec 06, 2010 12:35 pm Did you get it done? If not I'll post a how to for you Re: Changing the gas bottle on a BBQ. 20Dec 06, 2010 12:58 pm Ok the connection on the old BBQ is like the first pic Richo posted... somehow I think I disconnected the wrong end of the regulator (?). . It kept popping out after I tried to fix it. The BBQ was over the hill anyway. The new one (new for me, it was my brother's) is like the second pic, I can now see what I have to undo, it has those prong things (I hope that's the right bit) but it is so tight I can't undo it. I tried with some tools but it won't budge and I'm a bit scared to fiddle around with it any more. I'll just have to wait til I can catch my neighbour a few blocks down at home. Thanks for all your help, I do feel really stupid. But I can't be the only one with a fear of these things can I? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself.
