Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jun 16, 2009 6:27 am Long story, but I lent a few paint brushes and rollers to a mate... Now I'm fairly fanatical about cleaning my brushes properly after each use, but they've come back what I would call "gummed up"... Not sure, but I think he's used the brushes for a few hours, and the paint has dryed right up at the handle end of the bristles... And the end of the day he mustn't have soaked them in warm soapy water, but just given them a quick wash and rinse before letting them dry further!! I've tried soaking them again in hot soapy water, but no avail... What is the best way to clean up old, but good brushes? Metho? Paint Stripper? Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: Restoring Old Paint Brushes??? 2Jun 16, 2009 12:38 pm Hi chuth77, Metholated spirits will dissolve acrylic paint and you can buy brush restoring solutions from most paint shops. When you clean the brushes use a clean wire brush to get all the paint from the bristles and when they are clean wash them in warm soapy water and every three cleans, follow that with a rinse in fabric softener. They will last for years if you do this. It may be time to buy yourself some new equipment and keep the other gear for relatives and friends to borrow. Cheers PP Re: Restoring Old Paint Brushes??? 3Jun 17, 2009 11:33 pm Have you priced brushed lately? The cost of product and time probably exceeds the cost of the brush. if it was a really good one, it won't be after restoration. If it was an average one, why bother? Thanks Chippy,I do have one that I levered out. I'll try to find a brand name on the windows then do some searching.
