Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jun 08, 2009 11:07 pm Water was spurting out from the top & bottom of the T-connection at the back of my bath tub mixer (see attached image, red circle). A family-friend electrician, not really a plumber, said that was lead soldered a long time ago, and it'd be impossible to put copper soldering on because the blue circle connection - also lead solder - would melt. IMG_0280.JPG He suggested 2 options: 1) turn off mains water, dry it out (he already cleaned it with some sharpening tool) and put on the 2-part glue. 2) cut it out and connect back with a T-connection (I don't really know what to call it properly, but I used it to split the cold water tap into 2 in the laundry). So I tried out option 1 before getting a plumber back into my house (for the 4th time in a year ) to do option 2 or whatever else that can fix it. Off I went to Bunnings, grabbed the Bostik Epoxy Bond Super Strength (not the 5-minute variety) and applied it twice in 2 days So far so good, but my questions are: - Is the epoxy bond strong enough to hold off water ? Does it melt down with hot water usage ? - Any other options and advices, please ? thanks heaps Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Plumbing help please - Leaking pipe connection 2Jun 08, 2009 11:20 pm Simple answer, Heat over 60c WILL weaken it Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Plumbing help please - Leaking pipe connection 4Jun 09, 2009 5:56 pm I just wrote a discription on how to replace the tee....Ive just edited it out. i should learn to read better or at least comprehend what I read. The split on your recess tee can most likely be silver soldered. the nearby joint can be either wrapped in a wet cloth which will stop the joints on the soft soldered tee melting or it can be sprayed with a cooling jell. Id do both. from what i can see of the joint, the split seems quite accessable so it can more than likely be silver soldered (not 50/50 solder) using oxy. Ive done heaps of more difficult joints closer to soft soldered fittings than that is. I wouldnt try using epoxy, because it will make it very difficult to repair when it fails....and it will eventually. A plumber local to you wouldnt charge much more than $100 to $150 to fix that.
