Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Mar 27, 2009 1:13 pm Hi, I've been a bit of a lurker here on this forum for a while, but this is my first post. The ceiling of my house is leaking, and it appears to be originating from the front balcony. What is the best thing for me to do? Is this something that a builder can fix? We'll also need to replace or repair at least part of the ceiling, which we'll do once the leak is stopped. All and any advise is appreciated. Re: Help - leaking ceiling 6Apr 05, 2009 11:58 pm It depends on how your balcony is built. If its concrete, tiled with a brick wall, first check that your balcony is draining correctly. There should be at least one drain hole, either as a simple hole through the brick wall with a piece of usually pvc pipe penetrating it, or a drainage outlet that is connected to the stormwater. Either way, make sure they arent blocked, alowing the water to dam up and pentrate back into the building. If all is ok there, you have to start thinking about water proofing. If you have tiles, perhaps the water is penetrating through cracks between the tiles. If its older than 10 years it may not have been waterproofed. In that case you may have to remove the tiles and waterproof it and then retile. It might be best for you to post some pics. Also, if your ceiling is open, look inside and see where the water is comming from, use a hose and see where its penetrating from.
