I have been in my new home a year and the bedroom door has already come away from the hinges.. literally The hinge screws which where screwed into the door frame have given way. I first noticed trouble when i had trouble closing the door . I Tightened the screws on some of the hinges but a few of the screws just turned without tightening. PD are arranging someone to come out and refit the door which is good ,problem solved but wondering what is the correct method to rehang the door so the screws wont come loose again. My way of thinking is the problem may recurr if the screws are rescrewed into bare wood ( like they where originally ) Does anything need to be inserted into the screw holes to keep the screws in place . a friend told me to insert a match stick into the screw holes Sorry the photos havent come out clear Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: bedroom door come off its hinges 5Mar 03, 2009 1:27 pm Yes a friend was telling me that today. He said the wrong size screws have been used. i need a bigger gauge.
The person who hung the doors proberly didnt have the right size screws and used what he had on him. So now if thats the case PD are going to have to check all the doors and replace the screws Re: bedroom door come off its hinges 6Mar 03, 2009 3:04 pm I had that in a rental with a landlord provided dryer...
They used larger screws and liquid nails or such in the hole. Re: bedroom door come off its hinges 7Mar 03, 2009 3:11 pm I recently hung a door. I bought some new hinges which also came with screws in the packet. I'm no great handyman, but even I laughed at the screws. They were tiny ! No way were they suitable for the job. I found some bigger screws, but even they were loose in the existing holes (I was rehanging a door where it had been years before).
I also used the matchstick trick - just poke a matchstick in the hole, then insert the screw - works wonders. To make things easier easier you can also put a bit of soap on the screw. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: bedroom door come off its hinges 9Mar 05, 2009 1:15 am If you fit heavier gauge screws you may find them too large for the hinge holes.
To fix this properly, whittle down some round tapered wooden plugs, put some glue into the hole and tap them snugly (without belting the daylights out of them possibly splitting the door) and when dry fit the correct size screws. You may need a 2mm pilot hole. Arfur Re: bedroom door come off its hinges 10Mar 05, 2009 1:42 pm Thanks uncle for your advice
Yes had the problem fixed yesterday . A maintenance guy from PD came around and rehung the door 4 me. He used longer Gauge screws and packed the holes with bits of wooden skewers he said that will hold. He told me that the screws used originally are normally used for the hinges And that the doors are made of compacted cardboard Probably some of you know this already.. same with skirts and window frames. cheap way out to build houses i say I said my last house built in the early nineties was stronger than this. Welcome to the house of card board Re: bedroom door come off its hinges 11Mar 06, 2009 1:03 am I think you are referring to the light weight hollow core internal doors which seem to be the norm and are quite serviceable. The skirts 'aves and window reveals are usually now MDF which are strong enough until they come into contact with water. Arfur Re: bedroom door come off its hinges 13Apr 25, 2009 12:49 pm Depends on which way the door opens. If you can see where the thing goes in the hole on your door frame you can use a credit card to push the thing back and pull or push the door open. If the frame is in the way something flexible but stiff would work. If the door handle has a hole in the middle of it get a paper clip and straighten it out and push that in the hole, you may have to twist it around to get it to open. If you can see the hinges get a screw driver and a hammer and knock the pins upward. The door should come off without too much problem.
