Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Feb 22, 2009 3:49 pm Hi there
the first step on my highset house (in Brisbane) needs replacing (i think) and so to the hand rail - i think they have been damaged by water and also just age. below are some photos of the step (first step is concrete, first wooden step is the one i need replacing) as you can see from the photo the wooden step is supported by some concrete stumps. WIth the step - what would be the best tradie to get to do this job - a carpenter, builder or a home handy man? is it a difficult job? how much do you think it would cost to replace the step and the hand rail? appreciate your advice - trying to get an idea on the costs as i also have a bathroom to tidy up, cleaning the external walls etc etc. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: wooden step & hand rail need replacing 2Feb 25, 2009 12:17 pm How handy are you?
If it were me I would repair the step. (unless rotten more than 50% deep...) Dig out all the rotten timber and fill with putty/bog/epoxy/something and sand and paint. Handrail ... not sure on cost as I can't see what is wrong with it from your pictures, but I would rip it off and buy a length of timber the same and screw it on and paint. The way I start all DIY projects is this: 1. See something I don't like/want to change. 2. Demolish it/rip it apart Then I can either fix it myself or I can't. If I can't then I have to pay someone who can... PS. My most used tools are a sledge hammer and wrecking bar. If you were to do it yourself I would say materials $100 ish and 3 hours. Pay someone I would GUESS at $300 ish...??? Good luck and have fun! Re: wooden step & hand rail need replacing 3Mar 05, 2009 1:48 am From your picture it seems the bottom tread supports the staircase so the job will require some care if the tread needs to be replaced. It is a job for a (much maligned) carpenter tradie, supporting the stairs while the replacement takes place
I assume by 'handrail' you mean the capping on the top? This is easier and can be replaced with permapine timber screwed into place with galvanised screws and painted. Arfur Electrical just got back to me and said the most they can provide is a single power point on the Bedroom 1 side of that wall. After handover, your towel rail installer… 2 3848 the step up is 30mm and wanting it to be flat . how much does the concrete have to be lowered .we plan on removing bath and lenghten shower and adding seat. the old bath… 0 11835 Do I need to concern about this pattern of crack? Is this crack showing some signs of bigger problems? Thanks for any suggestions! 1 1914 |
