Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jan 15, 2009 3:08 pm Hi everyone
We have just bought a house and there is some asbestos - lining to some walls and ceilings. There is minor damage to one sheet that needs to be removed, otherwise, the remaining sheeting is in tact. I don't like the idea of asbestos at all, and although the majority is undamaged, I want it gone! I keep hearing ppl say that if it's not damaged then don't mess with it. Someone said that even changing the lighting where attached to an asbestos ceiling is risky as drilling can release fibres. Similarly with painting (which is in dire need), the preparation needs to be minimal to avoid fibre release. Anyone have anything to ease my mind a bit pls?? We have had a quote to remove all and it wasn't too bad. But then, you have to replace what was taken with something else which equals more $$$. I'm stuck! Re: Asbestos removal 2Jan 17, 2009 8:18 pm It's nasty stuff but mainly due to the fibres - ie drilling etc.
There are a lot of govt web sites that discuss it a lot. Such as. http://www.asbestos.act.gov.au/about_asbestos.html#health http://www.health.vic.gov.au/environment/downloads/asbestos_home2003.pdf Re: Asbestos removal 3Apr 20, 2009 6:09 pm Bumping this old thread up. Any idea on the cost of replacing asbestos walls? We have some walls which can't be prepped but are bowing and look terrible. So we thought we'd just redo the whole room. How much, roughly, does it cost to rewall a room of about 4x4m? (I know how much the removal etc will cost... just wondering now how much the actual build might cost...) Thanks for your help. Re: Asbestos removal 4Apr 26, 2009 9:04 pm Gyprocker I know will sheet and set for around $13 sq.metre. 10mm wall plasterboard you can buy for around $3.90 sq.metre. That brown colour looks like Masonite or hardboard. Get it checked but typically asbestos was used in wet areas and plaster board or Masonite in other areas 1 9993 ![]() 1 8508 ![]() 1 10658 ![]() |
