Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Dec 18, 2008 8:54 am My DH is away and left me to prep walls and celing in our bedroom.
There is a section that that a crack around the wall and been covered (by previous owner) with a sticky wall paper boarder thing. The paint work is a little flaky and the plaster is crumbery, so much that i can see mesh inside it So how do i prepare these surfaces? cracked paint, falling apart plaster flaked paint. Is it the same for cracks in celing as well? [/b] Re: wall preping questions 2Dec 18, 2008 9:01 am If you can see mesh I would say it has been patched before
You may be wise to look into the cause as well as fixing the problem. As for fixing / patching there are some really good products available at most good hardware stores cheaply. Plaster in a tube etc. Just drop into a hardware store and tell them what you want to do. Re: wall preping questions 3Dec 18, 2008 9:22 am How old is the plaster/house? Get rid of as much loose plaster as you can, no point patching unless what your patching to is solid. Sand area and edges with rough paper to give patching something to bite in to. Buy plaster, mix up, using a trowel push in as much plaster as you can, make sure it gets into the mesh and fills the area. Smooth off but make the top lower than the wall. Let it dry then put a skim coat over the top to smooth it all out. Sand. Paint.
If it's just a small area, buy tube plaster as above, otherwise buy a bag and mix it yourself, it will work out a lot cheaper if you have more repairs to do. Plaster will keep for a while. Re: wall preping questions 4Dec 18, 2008 3:28 pm mattwalker You may be wise to look into the cause as well as fixing the problem. Can you explain more, should i be calling a professional, or is it something i may be able to identify myself? Im pretty new at all this, though i have seen and assisted my DH doing some of this work, though he tends to try and cut corners and the job isn't as good as it could be. The house was built in "83" though we are assuming the downstairs area was built in later, couldn't tell you when though. Skim coat? what is this, the guy at the paint shop also mentioned skim. Thanks so far, for the advice, everyone seems to be saying the same thing, so i must be on the track Re: wall preping questions 5Dec 18, 2008 6:50 pm Have a look at this site www.plasterbrokers.com.au
They have great tips for DIY plastering. Give it a go and remember it is a lot less effort to put some more fill into a dip than it is to sand off excess fill. Cheers PP Re: wall preping questions 6Dec 18, 2008 9:57 pm Thanks PP great site.
Upon closer insection the crack around the walls, appears to be mainly paint (phew) its a very consistant crack running on the two opposite walls about half way 1 meter. Could this just be where the plaster board sheets a joined and not properly prepared first time? Also the mesh is a yellow colour and not far inside the wall 3mm-4mm. It also seems that most of the plaster is intact and not crumberly just very flaky paint. So prehaps a light sand to remove flaky paint fill and resand is all it needs? Not sure what council area you are in. Some LGA's allow zero lot retaining walls. This usually occurs in greenfield developments but not often in established areas.
