I am a complete and utter novice when it comes to painting. I have used a single coat of grey tinted undercoat/primer to cover the original paint work (green and mulberry walls). I am using Taubmanns "Finish" brand (approx $50/6 litres) as undercoat and topcoat (tinted "Classic White"). The paint salesperson recommended the grey undercoat knowing the topcoat is white. How many topcoats do I need to apply before I can't see the undercoat? So far I have applied 2 coats and can still see many large patches of undercoat "ghosting" through. Am I being impatient and lazy expecting coverage from 2 coats? I am using the hardware store's brand of roller but will invest in a quality lambswool roller tomorrow. I am on room 1, with 7 to go, so any advice will be gratefully received. Thankyou. Re: Interior painting - brand quality, undercoating, topcoats 2Nov 19, 2008 8:25 pm I'm not exactly a painting expert either, but if it was me ....
I would use a white undercoat as it tends to be cheaper ($50 for 6L sounds expensive) and helps hide the original wall colour. You may apply a second coat of undercoat if the original colour (green/mulberry) is very strong (easier to paint an additional coat of undercoat than topcoat). Then topcoat it. Number of topcoats depends on the colour underneat, colour of the topcoat, quality of the paint, and painting technique/experience. When it comes to painting, a lot of people I know would choose a colour that is a shade darker than the current colour. Chris Re: Interior painting - brand quality, undercoating, topcoats 4Dec 13, 2008 4:50 pm I'd like to get back into painting, something I haven't done since high school. The problem is that I've never purchased my own supplies; I used to just use the art supplies from the art classroom. I don't have very much money to experiment with, so I was wondering if anyone knew of some cheaper substitutes for common painting supplies. Also, canvas is too expensive, so what else can I use acrylic paints on? Where could I get it and how would I prepare it for painting?
