Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Nov 04, 2008 2:24 pm Recently I posted a ? re peeling paint in our sitting room. We had a good drop of rain overnight and now I know that the roof is leaking ... so it looks like we will have to restore it. However, I have some questions before we do it.
1. INSULATION We have 24 year old blow-in insulation (cellulose I think). In some places it must have moved as the ceiling gets very hot in corners and all along the western side of the house the top 3-4 rows of bricks get extremely hot I guess heat transferred from the roof. Should we have the old insulation removed and replaced with something else? If yes, what would be the best option? ... and as those top bricks get so hot, should there be some insultion under the eaves so the heat is not transferred throught the roof tiles? 2. TV antena. As we will be restoring the roof, the valleys will be replaced as well, however, our TV antena is attached to one of them so... do we need to have it fixed in a different place so as to enable the roof restoration people access to the part they need to replace? Just as an explanation, the antena was fitted by a "professional" it was not a DIY job. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Maggie Re: roof leaking, paint peeling, advice needed please 2Nov 04, 2008 5:49 pm Sounds like they never installed the insulation properly in the first place Lazy installers and more common than it should be.
I'd leave it there, and look at having the existing insulation topped up if it needs it and make sure they do their job properly this time. re the eaves, if the bricks are getting hot due to theat through that roof, then sounds like you've found the issue. Or is the heat building upin that area and then transmitting through? Antenna - ask the roofing people. They maybe able to sort it them selves. If not, remove it yourself as best you can and get an antenna mob in to re-install it. or get an antenna mob to remove the antenna mast and store it away till the roof is done. Then the antenna mob can put it back for you Re: roof leaking, paint peeling, advice needed please 4Nov 05, 2008 1:34 pm Thanks guys, I have a whole bunch of trades people coming within the next two days so we will see what they will come up with. I have my fingers crossed as it seems like a bad streak for us, everything is falling apart. Now I understand why some people keep building new houses.
Maggie Re: roof leaking, paint peeling, advice needed please 5Jan 14, 2009 6:05 pm Two years ago I had the same problem of roof leaking and paint peeling in my home. I thought, perhaps my home needs renovation and some one told me about pest and building inspection services in Australia. I was much worried about the cost and expenses but when I got their services I got surprised of their affordable cost and professional work. They made my home more strong and reliable. Now I am very much relaxed and no more worried about roof leaking.
