Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Oct 29, 2008 9:34 am We painted our lounge and the paint started to crack nearly immediately after. The house is 25 years old, this room was painted twice in its life, the cracks are now peeling, full thickness of the paint. We never had this problem before, the walls were washed down with sugar soap and painted with dulux. The worst affected areas are cornices and one wall. It is external wall it has a garage under main roof on the other side.
I need advice please what to do with it, before we try and repaint this wall and cornices. I had a look at the other post re: peeling ceiling but this wall is just plaster on render so a bit different to the other situation. Thanks Maggie Re: paint peeling after painting, advice needed 3Oct 29, 2008 2:29 pm Solid double brick which is cement not clay .
All layers are peling together so it looks like the new paint works as a peeling agent taking everything with it leaving the plaster underneath visible. I am worried . Maggie Re: paint peeling after painting, advice needed 4Oct 29, 2008 4:58 pm Hi ya Maggie,
There is a product by dulux called sealer binder that i was recommended by a paint shop and a tradesmen to use before I painted.. Especially for our brick/plaster walls. Apparently it soaks through the old paint and helps each coat stick to each other. Works amazingly ! Especially with my old place that has about 10 layers of paint. I havn't heard of new paint lifting old paint like that, someone else may have though. Have you checked for water damage ? I know someone who had paint peeling and they had water coming in through the roof - Not sure why yours started peeling, hopefully someone else will know ! Maggie don't be too worried, if you coat it with the sealer binder and you will have to repaint it....it's a bugger but not to horrendous ! I check my roof for leaks by looking in the roof cavity by removing the man hole , I use a torch, look for any water damage, if you think you have found a damp spot, get someone to hose the roof - aka fake rain !! lol. Then look for where the water is entering.. good luck xx Re: paint peeling after painting, advice needed 6Oct 29, 2008 7:43 pm Maggie,
Paint peeling from plastered solid brick walls is quite common. There are a number of causes eg not letting plaster repairs to dry properly before painting, moisture in the wall, or not properly sealing the plaster before painting. Best thing to do is to if there's no moisture problem in the wall: 1) scrap loose paint off 2) use plaster finishcoat product to level the surface 3) lightly sand back 4) wait till fully dry before sealing (you can use special sealing paint if you like, I use an undercoat paint) 5) paint Has worked well for me. I had a look at our roof and I am afraid we wil have to have the roof recoated. I think it will take place before next winter's rains ... we will repaint after that is done. I will let you know how it went.
