Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Dec 30, 2022 8:51 pm Hi, I have drilled many a hole in my double brick house in WA over the past 10 years, but have become a bit shy of drilling after hitting a random water pipe that I didn’t expect to be within single brick depth (didn’t go all the way through brick depth) above a window frame that wasn't in a wet area. So given that I am now flummoxed as to where in the hell pipes, conduit, wires, etc might be, I am looking for a scanner that can detect metal, wires, etc within single brick depth. I just started drilling again into an area for curtains, that looks clear on my plans, but it is making a different sound from the norm and I’m worrying about what might happen if I keep going without checking with a scanner. Bloody WA building weirdness! Any tips or recommendations would be very welcome!! Cheers, V. Re: Wall scanner recommendations Western Australia (double b 2Dec 31, 2022 1:58 am Unfortunately what you want doesn't come cheap. To do what you want requires a wall scanner and you are looking over $1k for a decent one. Stud finders usually won't work for what you are looking to do. Basic rule is electric wires are chased straight up from switches into the ceiling. Water can be a bit trickier particularly now with PEX pipes. It would be very unusual to hit a water pipe on a wall that isn't in a wet area or backs onto one. You wont have a water pipe near a window unless it was in a wet area so your curtains will be fine. The only thing that is metal up there is the lintel. You should be able to get a low end version of it for around $250 from AliExpress. I think plumbers should also follow a rule of putting water pipes directly above or below water sockets and use exclusively ceiling space to run pipes through.
