To be honest, based just on this image, I don’t think you would get much purchase with just 18mm thick timber. Personally, I would use something 40-50mm thick to get more bite to tighten the fixings. Of course, given that you can't get the screws in tightly enough, you might just end up with a unified wobble across both legs.
