Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Feb 01, 2021 12:00 pm Hi there, we recently built a double storey house atop a bit of a hill by the beach, so that it's exposed to the elements on all four sides, above our neighbours. The overhanging roof and eaves [both upper and lower] were not built broadly/deeply enough - meaning that when it rains, the water pours through the windows [which slide horizontally to open/shut] and into the house. Every time it rains, we do mad dashes through the house to shut all the windows and it's a bit ridiculous now. We end up using the air con in rainy season because of the constant opening and closing of windows. What can we install to the windows, or change,to keep the water out when it rains? Do we need new windows that open from top to bottom instead? Awnings? Plexiglass shields? New roof and eaves? Thanks for any help, photos for perspective. I am very grateful for your input and advice. Take a look at this to see what depth is suited to your location Shading | YourHome Re: Narrow eaves + water pours in when it rains 8Feb 05, 2021 6:37 pm LauraKB I take it the windows only let water in when they are open, it's not like they leak or anything? The better option would have been awning windows. You can keep them open a bit without having rain blow in. Sliders are cheaper so become the default window for builders. At the likely angle that's going to be difficult to deal with except by changing window type. Re: Narrow eaves + water pours in when it rains 13Feb 06, 2021 7:10 pm Eco there is no problem with the windows, they don't leak. The rain just blows in when the windows are open. Re: Narrow eaves + water pours in when it rains 18Feb 08, 2021 9:55 am Our front porch is 1.1m deep and keeps out light rain from coming in the front windows. We live near the water and when the wind is behind the rain, it can wet nearly the entire window. I thought the porch would have been wide enough but its not. How do you go with the rain on the downstair glass doors? Update from me! Couldn't find the trimmer - not sure if there isn't one simply because the eave is so narrow. Went ahead with the spring toggles and it all worked out… 7 5832 The two 15mm holes are obviously not compliant. The Dept of Fair Trading would love to see this one! Do the gutters pool water after it stops raining? Although it's… 4 7820 Thanks again for this information. If you do hear anything different, would be great to know 4 8182 |
