Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Nov 05, 2020 3:26 pm Tough times with a economy that is not diverse and comparable to Kazakhstan, with australians dumping all of there money into convential housing and culture, with a bunch of investors using bank loans driving up the cost of housing over the past how ever many years, making it impossible for a person like myself to have his freedom. Since Australians are like sheep and have all been saying the same thing for who knows how long, renting is dead money, you need a investment property to get ahead, ect. Without thinking of the negative consequences for younger generations trying to get into owning their own home, younger generations not being able practicing gardening or spend money on investments in innovative ways such as technolgy and businesses. I am a young 25 year old, and want to own a bare bones place, that is good enough for a wife and kids, but cheap so I can pump my excess cash into the ground around me and slowly build gardens and work to upgrade "as I go". This country seems to forget, that my nan and pop and those before them were raised in tents after settling here in Australia, as worked hard, raised familys and built houses. We now live in a country where we look down upon this kind of behaviour and have in fact out lawed it. I can not buy a block of land in town or out, and legally live in a tent with just a simple power out let and water outlet and have a outdoor bathroom and kitchen barebones scenario while I go to work and save heaps of money on the rent I would be paying to slowly build the house, heck, it is even now illegal to do so without paying councils ect, for approvals and these kinds of things. Now I'm not against approvals but I as a young guy, who thinks alot differently to most people, feel outdated by society and that there is no one to talk to, so I can found out all of the information, the council will only ever send me a PDF and from what I can make of it, people like me are just an eye sore and people don't want a family working hard to raise a family, go to work, and build alternative housing next to their house on their block because it looks like poverty and is not the white picket fence that we have been indoctrinated into being so used to. I made alot of mud bricks by hand with a cheap mixer with just soil, the bricks were great and didn't need to be fired. I am now looking at aircrete (concrete foam), canvas concrete as building methods. But I have no idea about the laws, the codes, feel like If these tax paid authority's like councils want to impose laws on what I build on my land with my own hands, then I should be entitled to someone to give me a call and run through all of this, but it seems like no one cares about me and I am just a eye sore and a problem.. In my personal opinion Australians are spending too much time and money on traditional housing and I'll tell you why. The house I currently rent is 330 a week in qld, cairns, will be 350 if they install aircons as we only have one air con in one bedroom. This house went for 50 grand in 2005, which in 2020 money, that is 70 grand aud. Now I have to pay 4 times the amount of money that I would of had to 15 years ago. And a big part of this is because of investors, mum and dad investors, foreign investors, because, when these people invest, alot of the time they take out big loans and the banks are also making a killing off of this big bubble. So investors and banks profit largely, while leaving poor people like myself played up when I was a teenager and young adult are now stuck working passionless jobs for 20 - 25 bucks a hour, and dont have the luck to get a high paying job, like alot of investors and other people who are able to afford big mortgages have, I represent a growing chunk of the population who is just unable to afford it. We live in 2020, in a great country but for some reason alot of young people are being almost forced into a life of debt over 30 years struggling with mortgage stress, managing families and never getting ahead. Never having chance to grow their own food because they live in a rental where they cannot even hang a painting on the wall without consequences. I will post a couple of links. But for a long time humans have built structures and still do to this day, that don't have concrete or stone foundation. Now I cannot do that, or I feel I can't and it's looked down upon. I would be happy to pour a slab of strong traditional and build aircrete panels, which are great for insulation and could be the building material of the future, but i feel like mud bricks, aircrete, all of these things will be a night mare to get approved. I also know according to council here I am not legally aloud to live in a tent or caravan while I do this without approval and to their liking. Yet I can legally park and live in my car on the open road and rest stops. It makes no bloody sense, and I'm trying to innovate around this system to create an affordable place I can call my own where I do the building myself. But have no idea how to go about it, and need help from professionals who can give me guidance. These are the links: https://youtu.be/_QQVmZ3UYxk https://youtu.be/zTvy5Ut8eps https://youtu.be/flKBDtAMEE8 , along with mud bricks which are self explanatory, I could make by hand enough bricks for a bedroom in approx 2-4 weeks, but I more looking at aircrete panels as I can build panels with much much much less labor and time spent working hard, they are also light and great insulation. Where as to get a thick enough wall out of mud brick it needs to be like 30cm wide and that's like double the work again, plus without machinery it is back breaking work, so I could make heaps of aircrete panels and then I could store them until I have all of the pieces ready and the slab poured. I would buy a block that would cost approx 80 grand aud, which I would be able to afford for 80 bucks a week for the bank to pay it off with no deposit. I would say up a tent, toilet tent and a shower area as well as some sort of kitchen, I would need the block to have water, and power at the edge of block at least, and I would get it routed to where the house will be built, so I would have a hose for water, would use solar heating for most of the water for hygiene and electric water heater such as a jug for hot water for dish washing, I would spend alot more time working and less time inside on electronics, and be able to build towards something that is mine and alot more cost effective. Can anyone guide me or send me links or give me a phone call, anyone who does construction in qld australia or anywhere in Australia. That knows there stuff. Re: Alternative building/housing bubble help a young guy out 3Nov 05, 2020 3:40 pm It will be hard to get non traditional hand made materials to be approved as structural materials. If you still want to build singlehanded, possibly the easiest option will be to go with Hebel blocks on a relatively lightweight foundation. You would still have to hire roof carpenters, although the roof design itself can be very simple and relatively cheap e.g. skillion type. For internal walls you can always consider buying some metal studs in Bunnings and attaching gyprock to them. Or you can use Hebel blocks too. If you go with owner builder license, you would only legally require to use licensed plumbers and electricians, the rest you can do yourself. This I will keep In mind, is it hard to get a owner builder license and any idea on approx price i have to pay for it. Never heard of Hebel blocks I will have to research them and do a cost analysis and compare all my options as time goes on and i learn enough there is no rush but i feel a calling too it. I would love to pour a slab and then builde air crete panels as walls and do the roof myself, do you think.that is possible? Sorry if I am hard to understand I just got baked I'm on the medicinal cannabis scheme for anxiety Re: Alternative building/housing bubble help a young guy out 5Nov 05, 2020 3:57 pm Haha. Owner builder license is not hard to get If you do not have carpentry experience, I would still use licensed carpenters for roofing. But laying Hebel blocks is not hard and you can probably do it yourself (once you get off cannabis). Re: Alternative building/housing bubble help a young guy out 6Nov 05, 2020 3:57 pm aussieta sounds like you need to move to nimbin you will fit right in If only I could get a block worth 80 grand there with power and water close by. Also I don't know how good work is around there. I used to go to nimbin all of the time brother and played up for years and actually went to prison for supply of cocaine. Now I just got to work and train and keep to myself and would love to spend time gardening intensively and working as little as possible and just enjoy family life. I have a uncle at lismore and i am from around tamworth nsw. Lismore had a few decent blocks of land. I wonder I'll have a look nimbin way, have friends at casino. But I am in cairns qld at the moment, and I wish I could get a block here for now see some for around the right price close to town like a 20 min drive to work and center of town and the coast, and world class restraunts, so good. Haha cheers for advice my friend, I have built a little bit of framing and pallets and plywood construction I would probably just hire a guy to come help me it would be relatively small and as simple as possible. I also use very little and use 20 bucks worth every 2 weeks it's very little, I excersize sprints touch footy and home.gym.bodybuilding and go to work. Thanks so much for your reply it means alot Re: Alternative building/housing bubble help a young guy out 8Nov 05, 2020 6:48 pm alexp79 Haha. Tbh I had a look and I would prefer aircrete because it is so much less laying bricks it's more just put up 20 panels ect. Vs 1000s of bricks Re: Alternative building/housing bubble help a young guy out 9Feb 25, 2022 10:18 am HI Buddy, Have you heard of Grass Roots magazine? get your self a copy or two from your local library.
