Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jul 10, 2012 5:53 pm Hi, I'm new so hopefully this is in the right section. I have a porcher toilet that was leaking from the cistern onto the floor. After tightening the bolts (cistern to bowl) the leak did not go away so I decided to remove the cistern and replace the rubber gasket and washers. Unlike all those i have seen on the internet, I did not have any visible wingnuts to remove. When I got the cistern off (taking out bolts inside cistern), I found that my wingnuts are hidden inside the base of the toilet (I assume the cistern and toilet must be assembled before installation. My wingnuts also dropped down into the base as i removed the cistern. I can go and buy new wingnuts and washers etc etc, but i was wondering how you are supposed to reattach the cistern? There is no way I can figure out how to do it. I was wondering if it was ok, to install the bolts upside down, with the wingnut sitting in the water in the cistern (obviously with the rubber washer in the cistern too) - so that I can reinstall this myself??? Is this going to cause issues with it rusting on? (the previous bolt was not rusted at all - not sure of the age of the toilet as i have only been here 18 months). Can anyone give me advice of what to do? or should i just get a plumber out to put it back together. Thanks Re: Toilet repair - reattaching cistern 2Jul 11, 2012 9:14 am I thought I would update in case anyone was interested. I just went to the plumbing shop and got new bolt assemblies (they didn't just have the wingnuts and rubber washer thingos) (had to steal the bolts off a new toilet). Lucky i did get the whole thing - as the bolts were thinner than my existing ones so just the parts wouldn't have fit. Anyway I installed the bolts upside down. The wingnuts were plastic, so hopefully should hold up ok sitting in the water, and I figure the head of the bolt would have been in the water anyway so should be fine. Anyway no leaks yet from my amateur repair job - hope it will hold up.... I think next time I will just get the plumber back - it was much more complicated than i was expecting!
