Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jul 05, 2015 4:29 pm We put our new gates up in about August last year and the stain already looks like it's been there a few years so have started sanding and looking for a better stain. We used Cabots Exterior Decking Stain (water based) with the Cabots Clear over the top. We did 2 coats of stain and 3 coats of clear. Can anyone recommend something better? Or are we doing something wrong? Re: Best timber stain for a gate (timber is Jarrah) 2Jul 05, 2015 8:45 pm Exterior transparents (ie. Stains or clears) will never last as long as opaque paints. In an exposed area like a gate I would expect around 12 months before requiring a recoat. That said using a better quality product will help. Try intergrain 'naturalstain' or 'dwd' . Or Haymes 'Uvex'. Or Quantum 'Timbre plus verticle' Also given you are sanding make sure you allow the timber to leech and weather again properly before using a topcoat Get some long brass machine screws and bolt right through the gate and put brass acorn nuts and washers on the other side. It will never come off 1 9318 Hi everyone! This is my first time posting here, and I'm looking for some advice regarding my house construction project in North Kellyville.
