Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Apr 16, 2020 8:43 pm Hello everyone, I have built a 3X4m gabled roof pergola next to my house in the back yard. I would like to add 115mm quad colorbond gutters to it and connect the downpipes from the pergola gutter to my existing house downpipe which is right near the pergola. I am not sure if it is advisable to connect to existing house downpipes? If so, how do I do it? Do I make a hole in the existing square down pipe and fit a downpipe from the pergola gutters to it? Any help or photos or relevant links are really appreciated as I haven't done this one before. Thanks, Ris Re: Connecting pergola gutter to existing house down pipe 2Apr 16, 2020 10:02 pm It depends on the type of downpipe, for example, 90mm pvc downpipes have different fittings you could use with ease. No problem with flow when connecting an additional gutter into an existing downpipe because downpipes are mostly full of air. Check You Tube for instruction videos if you have metal downpipes. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Cleaner Neater Smarter Cheaper Supa Gutter Pumper. Re: Connecting pergola gutter to existing house down pipe 3May 01, 2020 3:35 pm You may find it difficult to find a junction fitting (Y piece) to allow the connection. You could do it by cutting a hole and inserting a new Pop (or nozzle) and connection to that, but it may again be difficult if its not near the end of the down pipe. Something to consider if the length of gutter the downpipe currently serves. NCC/BCA Vol 2 part 3.5.3.5 states a single 90mm round downpipe (or equivalent square/rectangle size) should not serve more than 12 lineal meters of gutter. If the 4m side of your patio/verandah/covered pergola is the one with the gutter, then the downpipe you attach to should be serving less than 8L/m of gutter currently, to avoid issues later down the track Re: Connecting pergola gutter to existing house down pipe 4May 01, 2020 5:19 pm CF Design Something to consider if the length of gutter the downpipe currently serves. The 2019 Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA) is Part 3 of the National Construction Code (NCC). On page 178 in the PCA, it is stated at Vic F1.2 that the design, construction, installation, replacement, repair, alteration and maintenance of a roof drainage system must be in accordance with AS/NZS 3500.3 HISTORY The Plumbing Regulations 2008 adopted the PCA in 2008. The PCA at the time of adoption (2004 edition) made no reference to the BCA under the DTS provision for roof drainage systems. On May 1 2011, the PCA was introduced into the NCC as Volume 3. At was at the time of this adoption that Victoria introduced the variation into the DTS provisions of Part D1 to exclude the BCA as a DTS provision for roof drainage systems. Victoria has at no time adopted the BCA as a DTS provision for roof drainage systems. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Re: Connecting pergola gutter to existing house down pipe 5May 01, 2020 5:37 pm The fact that it is stated in BCA stands and as such, I won't "correct" it. However, since I'm a Draftsperson and not a plumber, I will concede that your quoted clauses also exist as stated, and defer to those standards, by which any person employed/contracted to complete the works would be required to abide by Re: Connecting pergola gutter to existing house down pipe 6May 04, 2020 3:49 pm Further to my above response, I do retract my precious advice regarding 12m gutter service. I was shown an plumbing industry update that retracted the section of BCA Vol2 Part F3.5.2 It would have been nice if in the same revision they had actually amended Vol 2. Good work SaveH20 Re: Connecting pergola gutter to existing house down pipe 7May 04, 2020 4:33 pm The plumbing regulations can be a minefield where council, State and health regulations often overrule. Some of the 'trumping' has lead to unsatisfactory consequences but with regards to Victoria never having recognised the BCA roof drainage and stormwater regulations, the Australian Standards are stricter on maximum roof areas drained to different gutter cross sectional areas and downpipe sizes. It is because of this that AS/NZS 3500.3 has never had a maximum 12 metre apart or servicing a 12 metre length of gutter rule (the BCA has jumped between the two in recent years). 3in1 Supadiverta. Without having looked into it, I thought maybe it was a maximum threshold, where a design may technically be spec'd at say 13m but the code (because of its performance based nature) stops at 12m to ensure some headroom. Regardless, this came to me through a random Avenue and after reviewing, it showed the clear deviation from BCA.
