Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Sep 26, 2008 2:20 pm We need to build a small hardwood timber deck for our front porch as per diagram below:
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff151/melbournelyn/HomeOne/porch.jpg Porch is about 4.5m wide and 1.7m deep. The top of the deck will only be just over 15cm above ground level. DH wants to attach it to the house bricks, but if he does that all round won't it defeat the purpose of the expansion joins? If using treated pine stumps and bearers with hardwood decking should we nail it or screw it? This is one thing we really don't have a clue about. Would get someone in to do it but the quote was close to $2K (had it quoted along with some larger jobs) - could pave it in gold for that price!! Re: Small Timber Deck - Advice Please! 2Sep 26, 2008 3:26 pm You can hang joists off a timber wall plate (140x35 treated pine) attached to the bricks.
Your height doesn't allow you much room at all. Butt the joists into a bearer (140x45 treated pine supported every 1500mm with stirrups) on the front face using joist hangers - you will be best using 140x45 treated pine joists for the single span of 1.7m. Screwing the deck is a better method but that being said nailing with 'Timberdek" nails is fine as well. The screws will sit just below the deck board whilst the nails will sit proud of it. Re: Small Timber Deck - Advice Please! 4Sep 28, 2008 8:00 pm You could speedbore a few holes in the timber but being such a small deck I don't imagine it would cause any problems.
You could replace one or two bricks at either end with vents if really concerned. 1. Depth gauge, wrap duct tape where you wish to terminate your drilling onto the drill bit and use your eyes throughout performing. 2. 2 vs' 4, most at bunnings will… 2 2464 Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15923 I've just built 3 stairs off a landing out the back and been told by the private certifier I need hand rails sorry tried to attach a pic but couldn't mine don't have sides… 5 5720 |
