Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jan 24, 2019 9:52 am Hi, My neighbour is completing a renovation. While being away over Christmas, I've come back to a new fence being built on their property. There is/was an existing fence on the boundary and is still there. Are they 'allowed' to build this? What are my rights with regard to it - they've not painted the side facing me and it looks pretty poor. I presume i'm not allowed to paint it given it is theirs and on their property? By rights do you mean you’re seriously considering getting them to remove it? I’d be staggered if they objected to you painting your side, providing it’s done carefully to avoid any paint running over the top and down on to the face facing them. Obviously it’s been done for extra privacy and it looks like you have a shed right up against the fence and sticking above, so they probably wanted to block that ugly sight also. You’re basically benefiting from receiving extra privacy for no outlay. With a say dark charcoal colour applied to your side, you should be celebrating rather than consulting your rights. Re: Neighbour built a second fence 3Jan 24, 2019 11:44 am Hi Gillybean, I think you've jumped the gun a little there on what I am thinking. Completely agree with the privacy and it was something we wanted. My guess, the fence is theirs and I cant touch (paint) it without it their permission. Why should I have to paint it initially - surely they should have put it in a more presentable state?!(they did paint their side) Why not knock down the existing fence and rebuild it to requirements? (We'd have been looking to do that) Re: Neighbour built a second fence 4Jan 24, 2019 11:49 am rossog Hi, My neighbour is completing a renovation. Re: Neighbour built a second fence 5Jan 24, 2019 12:27 pm They've used blue board so my guess is that it's a screen rather than a second fence. It does look poor from your side (and doesn't look well constructed) and a thoughtful neighbour would consider the impact on others. Unfortunately many people only consider themselves. Best thing is to talk to the neighbours about your concern. They may be happy for you to paint it. I don't think your being "that neighbour" at all. I'd be interested to know if it actually has council approval, however once you go down that road things can get nasty very quickly if they haven't. I'd just try and talk to them, maybe ask them to come over to your place so they can see it then discuss what you can do to make it prettier. Tall privacy screens invariably need appproval over a certain height but I wouldn't go down that path. I would be more concerned about their windows overviewing your property and be looking at a suitable privacy planting to hide their house which would also hide the screen. 3in1 Supadiverta.
