Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Sep 07, 2008 5:33 pm So I know it's probably like asking how long is a piece of string... but what could I expect to pay per square metre for a deck? If it's relatively level land, not too high up and about 8 x 4 metres in size? I don't know too much about the types of wood avaible but I guess a good hardwood? I've heard of Jarrah and Merbau but that's about it.
Thanks! Re: Cost of a deck 2Sep 07, 2008 6:43 pm Exactly how high? Attached via ledger/wall plate or freestanding?
Ball park 8m x 4 m with 4 inch hardwood decking : Bearers - 6 x 140x70x4.2 = $500 ( you can save by laminating your own bearers using 2/140x35 and nail + gluing. approx $320) Joists - 18 x 140x45x4.2 = $570 Decking - approx 350 L/M $1400 If you tell me how high it is I can calculate your posts - there will be 6 post supports + ledger or 9 if freestanding. You will need approx. 1550 nails/screws which is about 4 1/2 kg. Where are you? Jarrah isn't used much in the eastern states. Popular choices are Ironbark, Blackbutt, Spotted Gum and Merbau as well as several others. Sealing the deck will cost you between $50 - $180 depending on what quality of product you use. Let me know if I can help with anything else part from labour costs. Otherwise I can give you a useable quote to work off Re: Cost of a deck 3Sep 07, 2008 7:49 pm Thanks Luke!
Unfortunately I'm only in the early stages of planning our new house and trying to work out how much to allocate for it. I'm located in Sydney. I'd say we would probably attach it to the house and it would be around 50 - 75 cm high. How much do you think I should allocate for it? Thanks heaps Re: Cost of a deck 4Sep 08, 2008 9:59 am You building yourself or getting a chippy in? This would make a fair difference in price.
I just build a 4x5(about 20sqm) deck with t/pine posts, bearers and joists, merbau boards build about half a metre off the ground for about $1800. There's a million variables, but if you DIY, allow about $100-$120 per metre for a low off the ground deck, more for a higher deck. I'd hazard a guess(don't quote me) maybe the same again for labour costs. Re: Cost of a deck 7Sep 08, 2008 2:04 pm I will say about 3-5 days, depending on the labouer, soil and conditions
Day 1 - Measure and mark - start to dig - collect materials Day 2 dig and cut posts Day 3 concrete posts and install bearers Wait several days for drying Day 4 Joists and start deck Day 5 Finish deck, trim, punch nails (if not hailgun), clean and stail (if needed) Adrian B Re: Cost of a deck 8Sep 08, 2008 3:13 pm Adrian B I will say about 3-5 days, depending on the labouer, soil and conditions Day 1 - Measure and mark - start to dig - collect materials Day 2 dig and cut posts Day 3 concrete posts and install bearers Wait several days for drying Day 4 Joists and start deck Day 5 Finish deck, trim, punch nails (if not hailgun), clean and stail (if needed) Thats one slow builder LOL A deck that small, a couple of chippies would nearly do that in half the time. I built a 22 sq. metre deck on my own in about 3 1/2 days. Any builder wil have the materials there ready at the start after having measured it up. The norm is to prop the bearers up and hang the post anchors in the hole. Overnight drying is fine for work to be continued as long as there isn't foot traffic on the framing members. Also, you never punch nails in on a deck - the correct nails to use, whether hand or gun nailed are the Timberdeck ( or twist nail). They are designed to sit proud of the board not punched under - that is how boards lift. Thanks Duke.....you just saved me from making an embarrassing mistake on the weekend (or next) when I'll be putting in the decking boards for the cubby. Most onder decks dont have twistnails in, hence the lifting.
As for the timeframe, Yes it would be done faster with 2 ppl, but I would think that builders would have all taht material at home, happy to be corrected. Make sure that they do not rush without letting the concrete dry properly, I saw a job wher ethey middle footing have sunk because they rushed the job. Adrian B Re: Cost of a deck 11Sep 09, 2008 7:39 pm Definately Adrian, the concrete should be left to cure before allowing any traffic on it. Everyones input is welcome surely. Overseas experience only adds to the place even if we are based in Australia and NZ. Re: 14Nov 18, 2010 3:54 pm hi duke, I am not really a handyman at the moment (since we are renting) but when the house is turned over, is it easy to learn how to do a decking? any specific skill that i need? elmer Dukekamaya Exactly how high? What could i expect to pay per sq meter for a deck (inclu professional labour costs) based on the following information. Whilst ultimately a total cost (including labour costs) is what I'm after, I'd be interested to understand the breakdown between materials and labour costs. I assume labour costs are based on time taken and the number of people required to build it (also assuming a min of 2 people required)? - size: ca.42sqm (10.45x3.00+3.10x1.3+1.50x4.30); - type: 135mmx19mm spotted gum decking; - stumps: concrete with ant caps - site: virtually flat/slight slope. - height: low to the ground. same height as floor level of house. Aware there needs to a min. 200mm from lowest timber member (bearer) to ground level. In fact may need to exgavate some parts in order to create min required clearance. other : no railing/balistrades required. One side (4.30m dide) will be a 2 course brickwork where the inner course will be the ledge that the bearers rest on. Thanks in advance. It worked out at about $100m2. That about 300-400 off the ground. It took me about 4 days over christmas to do mostly by myself. Im not much of a carpenter so someone with a little more skill than I could probably do it in 2 or 3 days. I had a few people come in and give me quotes, Most told me it would take 2 men 5 days and cost around 8k.... Re: Cost of a deck 20May 18, 2011 6:48 pm $250-400/m2 for treated pine sub-floor, merbau posts to 900mm, decking, "waterfall" decking to cover the sub-floor. People complain about the cost of decks. Dont forget you are adding a room. The sub-floor is made the same way that you make a sub-floor for an extension. Just because it is "outside" doesn't mean you construct it any differently. For example, we just quoted a 140m2 deck. The quote was $38K. The timber and other materials cost us $21K. There are 72 footings. It will take 3 blokes 3 weeks, 360 hours. Our average labour cost (incl profit) on the job is $47 /hour. It'd be lucky to make $5k on the job.
