Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Sep 04, 2008 7:39 pm Hi. I am *hoping* that this Spring I will actually muster the courage and strength to finally sand and seal my deck after...er....8 years! It's a big job but so far no tradies will come near it...cos they say it's a small job
FYI the deck I am referring to is 11 metres x 5 metres merbau. So that leaves little old me to DIY Well I figure I can hire a sander from Bunnings and how hard can that really be ( ) but the staining business is giving my the willies. I was thinking of going for LINSEED OIL. My deck guy (installer) recommended Feast Watson's DWD but it seems like it's a 2 or 3 step thing...whereas linseed oil seems kinda foolproof. Suggestions? BTW any recs for a tradie willing to do this job would be mucho mucho appreciated! Thanks! Re: Sealing a deck! What to use? 3Sep 05, 2008 7:27 pm The nails are a problem - one reason why fixing a deck with screws is a better method.
You will need to wash the deck first with an Oxalic acid. This is sold under many names but the best ( strongest/ $) is Intergrains 'Reviva' Intergrain also make DWD, not Feast Watson though they are owned by the same company. Firstly is the deck under cover or exsposed?? Sikkens is one of the longer lasting finishs and worth the exspense. If you would prefer a water-based finish especially if its out in the open, (in which case you will be recoating regulary) have a look at Intergrain 'Naturalstain' in Merbau tint. Re: Sealing a deck! What to use? 4Sep 06, 2008 6:57 pm Hi. Thanks for your responses.
Um....The deck is actually *gulp* stapled Some of these (a handful that are exposed to the weather) have lifted. Am I better off removing all the staples and using nails to re-fit the decking. And how would I do that The deck is covered but we are in an exposed postion (the deck is approx 1.8m of the ground, we live in a valley, get lots of wind and therefore the rain - when it comes - often comes in horizontally!). Probably 1/2 of the deck gets a good 'water' accordingly. Only the areas closest to the sliding door are always 100% dry. Given that, I will look in to Naturalstain by Intergrain as suggested (apologies for the mistake ). Thanks! Re: Sealing a deck! What to use? 5Sep 06, 2008 10:08 pm Stapled???? Who the hell did that? I'd remove what you can and screw the boards down - make sure they are galvanised or stainless steel.
Its more the sun that does damage to coatings rather than the rain. Look at the Sikkens Cetol range as well. Re: Sealing a deck! What to use? 6Sep 07, 2008 7:09 am Thanks Duke
I posted on another forum and it's been suggested they might be 'T nails' - they just happen to look like staples to me cos I KNOW NOTHING I am going to rip one out today and post a photo (maybe tomorrow due to Fathers Day celebrations, got a couple of things on etc). They deck guy was a RBP so I assume he knew what he was doing...other than that the deck is in excellent shape, looks the part etc. Well, actually the stairs suck but they were only meant to be temporary so I can't blame him Thanks for all your info so far. BTW Sikkens was also rec'd over Intergrain on the other forum so I might have to look in to it. Pics posted- need your thoughts :D 7Sep 08, 2008 7:38 am Ok. Here's a couple of pics of my sad old deck in need of TLC and a couple of close ups of these staples that I was referring to. As you can see it has gone silver but still cleans up nice as you expect from Merbau. Lucky for me I haven't ruined it after 8 years of leaving it to it's own devices
Thoughts? Sanding: yes? no? Orbital? Drum?
