Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Aug 25, 2008 11:22 pm OK started building the cubby.....will be an elevated platform.....cubby one end, fort arrangement on other, sand pit and toy storage under (overall 2.5 wide x 4.5 long x 1.5-ish high).
Pictures will come....currently only two posts in of several.....not much to see. The fort area will have decking boards but I'm putting them the wrong way round - grooved side up - because I actually do want the littlies to "get a grip". Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Now I know this is a technical no-no because the grooves are there to stop the boards rotting if you have them flat on the bearers - although I've seen lots of professional decks done the wrong way round . My question is can I put something between the decking boards and the bearers to prevent the potential rot issue.....everything will be treated pine.....any detailing tips would be welcome. I've seen black PE used between boards and bearers but can't see that helping. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Château TDL: The Cubby Chapter....Query on Grooved Decki 2Aug 26, 2008 7:17 am to_do_list Now I know this is a technical no-no because the grooves are there to stop the boards rotting if you have them flat on the bearers - although I've seen lots of professional decks done the wrong way round . I have seen many kids go A over T...my Son included
I must admit though, the cubby we bought from Aarons in Melbourne, has the decking boards up the wrong way too , but the kids tend not to play in it when it is raining, and the boards were quite sheltered, where as the deck at school was constantly used rain, hail or shine and was not under cover. Best wishes for your next project! If the success of your WIR is anything to go by, then the cubby will be a palace! Looking forward to it all coming together! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... The cubby house itself is from Aarons we bought it over from the old place just lifting it and adding the fort area, and yes the verandah boards were "upside down" and I didn't have rot problems, but I want to do it right.....to quote a forumite "Quality doesn't cost....it pays".... On another note spent about 2 hours digging two holes on Saturday for the first lot of holes.....not massive holes just bloody hard ground. Decided to hire a post hole digger for $50 for 24 hours suspect it might be a smarter/quicker move....apart from ear protection and not too loose clothing anybody got any other suggestion on anything else I should be wary about with this sucker.... That's exactly what I thought but I think it would be fun! Not fun when you get OHS updates about drilling contractors in the industry being scalped by unguarded augers.... ..... therefore I have a very healthy respect for the machine....but I had that image in my head too. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Château TDL: The Cubby Chapter....Query on Grooved Decking 12Aug 26, 2008 11:56 pm Lyn Our old rental had treated pine decking wrong way up on the porch and it just splintered all the time (when sweeping etc, but most memorably into my feet ). Maybe not good if kids are playing on it? Good point, I can see those thin strips degrading and splintering. Maybe I'm being a bit precious.....when I was young (forgive me as I move my goiter....that's better) I played on play equipment which was probably arsensic/creosote treated, no regard to anti slip, and probably not complying with soft fall requirements...nuthin' wrong me with me....nuthin' wrong me with me....wrong me with me....me....huh....huh.... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 10976 2 7209 There is no reason why building contract reconciliation cannot be done prior to handover, if the builder won't do it get someone to do it for you. Why would you pay for… 3 6691 |
