That being said if you coat it and its undercover it should last reasonably well Re: My alfresco decking II... 25Oct 16, 2008 8:04 am Wow, don't how I missed the latest pics ? Fantastic decking & what a quality construct ! You want to come to sydney with your FIL for a holiday this time next year,Firthy_26??
On a serious note, does this kind of structure require development approval from council ? Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: My alfresco decking II... 26Oct 16, 2008 9:09 am Thanks guys.
Not looking forward to staining it Southies. Checked with council & they told me the only thing I have to worry about is if any part of it exceeds 1 metre in hieght, which it doesn't. Cheers, Mike. According to our council, if any part of the decking exceeds ground level, then a permit is required. What a joke! FYI our decking is going to be 300mm above ground level. Re: My alfresco decking II... 29Nov 24, 2008 10:18 am Sacha1390 I must say I love the job you have done...I wonder how it looks now after all the cleaning and stuff is done on the timber... Dont know yet!!!! The tannins are still leeching through a fair bit, so will keep wetting it down every week or so until it drys out some more. I have decided to use Flood Spa n Deck product. It is a 100% acrylic water based stain, which will last alot longer than an oil (less re-coating which I like ). It is a natural stain, but I think I will add a "Merbau" tint to it as I like the darker look. Some really great info on Decking & Painting (& products) here... http://www.*.com/forumdisplay.php?f=77 Also going to put in some LED downlights (well uplights really ) down the length of the house & along the back for effect. Will give it another week or 2 before I get stuck into cleaning & preping it. Will post more pics once it's all done. Cheers, Mike. My Blog... http://ahouseonthehill.blogspot.com/ Re: My alfresco decking II... 31Nov 25, 2008 9:28 pm Washing merbau with an oxalic acid timber cleaner ( such as Intergrain Reviva) really helps with washing the tannin out. Re: My alfresco decking II... 32Nov 26, 2008 7:57 am Thanks Luke.
Have been reading the *** for a while about preparing decks & what products to use on them. Also to stain or oil would be the big question. Napisan also does a great job I hear on getting the tannins / dirt etc out, & a hell of a lot cheaper too . Have you had any experience with the Spa n Deck product?? Would like to hear some feedback from yourself Luke. Also the best / cheapest place to buy it from. Bunnings do 10lt's for $213.00. I need approx 30lt's Mike. My Blog... http://ahouseonthehill.blogspot.com/ Re: My alfresco decking II... 34Nov 27, 2008 10:24 pm Spa'n'deck has a reasonable reputaion, its a similar product to Intergrains 'DWD'
I find these type of water-based finishs a little too opaque for my liking. After 6 years in the chemical industry specialising in floor finishs and 4 years in the timber industry, I honestly believe mineral based finishs are the best outside. Whilst I never recommend traditional decking oils outside, I have simply found Sikkens to be the best deck finish. Use Sikkens Cetol Deck for softwood or Sikkens Cetol HLS for hardwood. Looks awesome Mike, what size ledger bearer did you use? and how deep were the dyna bolts into the slab? Thanks, Snake. I got all our stainless wire & attachments from here... http://www.MiamiStainless.com.au Very cheap I thought. It was 140 metres in total + all the fittings & only cost $350.00 delivered.
