Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Sep 06, 2016 10:23 am Hi all, hoping to get a bit of advice on installing a ceiling under a timber pergola, in particular what cost effective materials to use. The obvious materials that spring to mind are some form of water resistant plasterboard or cement sheeting. I have no problems in using those types of materials however my concern is will the pergola be able to handle the extra weight of these products? Using this products also means I will need to install extra timber between the rafters further adding to the weight The pergola is approximately 50 sqm, 10 meters wide and 5 meters long, the rafter (190cm x45mm) are spaced at 1200mm, the rafters attach to the back barge board (I think that’s what’s it referred to) using Pryda joist hangers and sit on top of the front barge board connected by joist straps. Other items to note are - Pergola is free standing but sits up hard against the house - Purlins sit ontop of the rafter and are covered with iron roof sheets - Pergola is covered on 3 sides - Pergola is in Metro SA so cyclones / excessive wind isn’t an issue - Knockdown is NOT an option - Insulated ceiling panels are NOT an option due to cost. Any assistance or advice would be very helpful, thanks Is there a building permit? RU in Victoria?
