Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jan 08, 2016 3:20 pm HI there, I am having trouble visualising the best way to set up the joists and bearers to achieve the following deck style Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ With my setup as you can see here Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ There is horizontal planks that will have nothing to fasten to. Do i need to make the bearer and ledger 2x as thick? Is there a simpler way that i'm just not seeing? Re: Joist pattern for deck setup 2Jan 08, 2016 3:45 pm I am not a builder in any capacity but I know what you mean - each piece of decking that sits within the decking 'frame' needs something to be screwed to, along the edges. Normally this would be the bearer but this will be covered by the decking 'frame'. I think you would do all the bearers/ledgers as normal, but either do two bearers along the edges, or nail extra pieces of timber between each joist, running along the edge bearers, if you get me..... I am trying to find a pic to show you.... Not the best pic but it does show the extra piece running along one of the edges. You would only need the extra along the two sides that each piece of timber butts into. Hope this helps? I am not very good at explaining myself!!
