Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Aug 09, 2004 1:51 pm We bought an ex Hunter Valley wine barrel with the intention of creating a water feature in the garden ie cut in half and have water circulating from one to the other with fish and water plants etc. However so far the sides of the barrels quickly get covered in a slime - sort of jellyish growth. I assume the wine residue impregnated in the timber makes for a great environment for such growth. Anyone have any ideas on how to stop it growing. Obviously with the desire to have fish and plants the solution needs to be envitronmentally friendly. Thanks in advance. Re: Slime in wine barrels used as water features 2Dec 09, 2004 10:35 am Barrels are made from wood and problems are often encountered when filling directly with water. Also if you intend to keep fish or plant stock the chemicals already deep in the timber can cause problems. The solution to this is to buy a barrel liner or pond liner. This will stop chemical reactions between the timber and water.
I suggest you go and take a look at www.waterfeaturesonline.com.au as there are articles galore on how to create barrel water features. Just do a search on 'barrel' on the article page. The Pond Shop on this site also has barrels, polycarbonate barrel liners and pond liner for sale for delivery anwhere in australia. It's Simple....Just Add Water!
