Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Apr 29, 2015 6:05 pm We have just built a new 8m x3m deck out of Merbua (140mm x 25mm) and the builder has advised us to seal or stain the new deck. However when we went to buy the materials to do this we were advised not to do anything to the new deck for at least 6 weeks to allow for the tannin to bleed. Question should we seal/stain now or wait for at least 6 weeks and as we wish to keep that lovely deep red colour of Merbau what product is best Thanks in advance Re: NEW DECK 3Apr 29, 2015 7:23 pm Hi Bradles, Unfortunately I can't give you the exact cost as it is just one component of what we are doing. The whole renovation consist of demolishing and rebuilding a skillion section of an old house which housed the bathroom and 3rd bedroom plus the old deck. However in saying that I have in the back of my mind when we were in the initial stages the builder did mention ( I think) that the deck section alone would be around the $8k mark. But don't hold me to that Re: NEW DECK 5May 07, 2015 6:08 pm Leave it 6 weeks then clean with deck clean and coat with a good quality deck oil. Depending on how much sun it gets repeat every 6 to 12 months. You need to deck clean each time. Our deck was in western sun and needed to be done every 6 months. A section was in the shade and it was always good hen it always got recoated. The deep red colour will stay if you keep it coated. I felt it did a good job and didn't slowly change the colour. It really brought the wood "out" - even pine. People often asked what the pine was - and didn't think it was just pine. I remember my first deck - we had a very wide flat piece build on the top of the rail - not thin as usual. For drinks etc. It really worked well. Many decks don't have this - you need tables etc. It meant visitors could stand around the outside of the deck and put there drinks down. Mind you - it was a metre or so off the ground.
