As it is a wood fired pizza oven and built in a permanent location in our back yard from bricks and concrete, would there be any regulations as to how big/small it must be, or how close/far we need to build it from the boundary fence or even how high the chimney needs to be? almost like this one: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Pizza Oven - Regulations Alkimos WA 2Mar 23, 2015 11:56 am Boesman We are building in Alkimos and would like to add an outdoor brick built pizza oven. That bottom and frame would make a great BBQ ... Re: Pizza Oven - Regulations Alkimos WA 3Mar 23, 2015 12:12 pm Hi Saint Mike. The plan I have to use the pizza oven as both a pizza oven AND a BBQ by simply making a small change with the front opening and welded metal door. So I guess that way I will be using at least twice a week. Re: Pizza Oven - Regulations Alkimos WA 4Mar 23, 2015 4:50 pm Thought I would be proactive. Went to my local council to see if I can get some guidelines/regulations from them as to what I may and may not build. Turns out, they dont have any guidelines when it comes to pizza ovens or bbq's. The only thing they COULD tell me is that if my 'structure' is going to be higher than 1.8m then I would need approval. I dont get it. How can they let me submit a plan for a pizza oven in order to scrutinise it and then hopefully approve, if they dont have any guidelines. Over the weekend someone told me to "Just build it man..... they'll never know". Well, I laughed while commenting that we are in a nanny state after all and surely one would have to get permission.... Somehow I am now of the opinion that HIS advice was actually the best. Is there any builders out there that have perhaps something to add in the lines of what one may or may not do? Re: Pizza Oven - Regulations Alkimos WA 5Mar 23, 2015 4:54 pm What I am planning is a brick built pizza oven underneath my patio. It will have a brick built chimney to underside of the patio ceiling, then a stainless pipe going through the ceiling and finally come out the top of the colorbond roof with a cowl/spark arrestor on top. I want the top of the chimney to be at least the same height as my roof apex. Re: Pizza Oven - Regulations Alkimos WA 6Mar 24, 2015 7:11 am Boesman Hi Saint Mike. The plan I have to use the pizza oven as both a pizza oven AND a BBQ by simply making a small change with the front opening and welded metal door. So I guess that way I will be using at least twice a week. Sounds good. Especially if you like pizza - and have a family that do. We use the BBQ regularly - and it is important to have a decent plate. Re: Pizza Oven - Regulations Alkimos WA 7Mar 30, 2015 2:33 pm If in doubt, always let your council know. You don't want to spend ~$3-6k (not to mention your time) on a new pizza oven only for the council to tell you to rip it down out of spite. Provide them with legible drawings with as much detail as you can and you should have no dramas getting it approved. Having no standards for pizza ovens/bbqs should favour it being approved, not hinder it. As long as you're not planning on building it out of straw and 5meters high precariously positioned next to your neighbours fenceline that is If you go ahead and build it without approval you'll likely have no dramas. But what IF they did find out (either by random inspection or perhaps a phone call complaint from a disgruntled neighbour about the smell of smoke coming from next door). The penalty (ie remove it) far out weighs any cost or annoyance of jumping through hoops in the early stages. In terms of Chimney height, Bunnings sell DIY pizza oven kits with chimneys that are rather short (300-500mm long) so I'd say any length of chimney you'd like would be acceptable. If the oven is underneath a patio/roof cover then you're best off extending it through the roofline - though depending on ventilation that may not be necessary. Also: You're probably on top of this already but make sure you're using firebricks for the oven part of the structure as regular bricks have the tendency to crack or explode when subject to extreme heat. PS: Love the pizza oven idea. I looked at doing one myself but couldn't justify it in the end as I wouldn't be using it more than once or twice a month. I'll get one some day though... nothing beats a woodfired pizza! Re: Pizza Oven - Regulations Alkimos WA 8Jun 03, 2015 1:02 pm Our house build is finished and I am now just about ready to start looking at getting the bricks for building this wood fired Pizza/BBQ. Will try to remember to post a photo when done. ......just need to draw a plan for it first as we have changed our minds towards doing a pizza oven and would rather build a BBQ instead like this one...
