Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Mar 14, 2015 5:09 am As the title says, I'm trying to figure out how I can use this space down the side of the house. The main backyard above alfresco will be a playground for the little one so unfortunately can't use that space, so it leaves the side of the house. Initially, I was going to put a shed there, which I'd still like to use it for some form of storage as we don't really have any. But I'd also like to make it an entertaining area, maybe an outdoor kitchen or BBQ area, or an enclosed room of sorts (would love a pool table but don't think I'd comfortably fit one in there with anything else). Would definitely try to put a bar there too. What options do you think I have with this? Patio with a shed and paved/concreted pad for entertaining Build an enclosed room/shed with a bar What else could I do? It's an awkward shape, on a corner and will need a minimum setback I assume from the fence. The main drivers for what could happen in this space in my view would be what either the Council or Developer will permit, given that this is a corner site and whatever you do here will be visible from that street front. Also, the way that you end up using this space may be determined by how you access it from the house. It looks to me that you can enter this space from the back through that 1m setback. Is this how you are intending to use it? Also, you may want to keep in mind that any shed that's placed on this side will be visible from the theatre, bed 2 and bed 3. You may not want to see a shed immediately outside any of these windows. Depending on the size of the shed, you may need to be a bit clever in how you locate it. Possibly between the laundry door and bedroom window? What are you intending with the fencing along this side? Is it going to be full height? Are you considering some sort of decorative fence along that boundary facing the street? Have you thought of a pergola in this space? If you are going to use this as any entertaining space a combination of paving and a pergola with planting on it could help define this space and make it really attractive from the side street. A pergola could also help disguise any shed that you might like to install. It could also be something quite pleasant to look at from the theatre, and beds 2&3 once any plants grow around it. Just a few thoughts and suggestions. I wish you the best of luck with it. Cheers, Jenny. Need hints, tips and inspiration? The entrance would more than likely be from the laundry door, it's more of a mens retreat over a proper entertaining area but would likely be used as both depending on how it turned out. A pergola is definitely not out of the question, and I think the first thing to do would be to see what exactly is permitted by local council being a corner block. That was my main concern before thinking about what I could even put there. The theater window covering will likely be closed 90% of the time on the side, as we'll probably try to keep that room dark. I hadn't considered the bedrooms 2 and 3 though, so that's definitely something to think about before I put anything in. I do like the pergola option with plants as it would look better from the road - probably making it more likely to be approved, and also a bit more attractive from the bedroom rather than have a big shed blocking any view/light. Chances are I may just have to sacrifice one bedroom window to get a decent size storage and entertaining area, and the theater window, else I probably won't get much down there. Thanks again for the reply, has left me with a bit to consider. You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want.
