Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Feb 26, 2015 9:59 am Hi Have a bit of a dilemma and hoping someone can give me their opinion. We are about to build a home and are stuck in where to put our alfresco area. We have two options, both being at the back of the house under the roofline. 1. Option one is to have at the rear North corner of the house, however this side of the house will be close to the side boundary at approx 2-3 m from the fence and will have a two storey house on the other side of the fence, another 2 m away possibly having an impact on sunlight. 2. Option two is to have the alfresco on the western corner. This corner of the house will be more than double the distance from the fence at 5.68m from the side boundary and only a single storey house on the other side which would have no impact to sunlight. http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn33/BigBBear/image.jpg1_zpscs9zyjtk.jpg Any help much appreciated. Re: Alfresco orientation - north or west facing? 4Feb 26, 2015 1:57 pm Big Bear Thanks goody59 Even though you'll have more overall entertaining area in option 2 as you won't be crammed in 2m from the fence? Just my opinion. I am going to have option one alfresco myself but my house design has all my living areas on the north side of my house and my block faces east similar to you. Re: Alfresco orientation - north or west facing? 5Feb 26, 2015 3:55 pm i would choose option two mainly it is going to be bigger and then you also wont have any one looking down at you in the two story house. Re: Alfresco orientation - north or west facing? 6Feb 27, 2015 6:47 am We had a west facing alfresco in our previous house and couldn't use it in the summer because of the extreme heat and the bugs. Can it go in the middle of that wall for a bit more privacy and less impact from westerly sun? Regards, Grumbles Re: Alfresco orientation - north or west facing? 7Mar 02, 2015 10:57 pm I'd be building with the majority of my living areas facing north. If this leaves enough room for the alfresco to be in the NW corner, good. If not I'd put it in the SW corner, as I think it's more important to have northern living areas for passive solar heating. See, http://yourhome.gov.au/passive-design Pity you'll be building so close to the northern boundary, particularly as you'll have a 2 storey home in this direction. This is likely to create unwanted shade in winter. It's better to build closer to the southern boundary if possible. Re: Alfresco orientation - north or west facing? 8Mar 03, 2015 3:51 pm What state are you in, Big Bear? If Victoria (and in Melbourne), I wouldn't go option 2. It will be freezing in Winter with the prevailing winds, too. I reckon you would get more year long use out of option 1....but that's me Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! I grew up in a house with a west facing backyard, and it made summer barbeques murder. No one wanted to be outside. It might be a bit darker in the mornings but the light is still light, so you should be getting it. Similar to what you see from your western windows 3 19992 The warning is on the sticker on the door too. Second the aluminium powdercoat 6 18204 0 638 |
