Also glad we went for the stronger beam - on wall - that meant we only needed one post - the wooden one - not a second in the middle. Re: Patio / Alfresco Cover ? 51Jun 22, 2014 8:18 am Its a shame that the house end supports didn't go through the house roof. It would have looked so much better. Personally, I would have not built it this way, I would have done a traditional roof over / fly over fixture. The finish is so much cleaner and the look is much more appealing. I would not rate your new patio as special or a thing of beauty at all. Sorry, but i guess my standards are set quite high. steve@everlastpatios.com.au www.everlastpatios.com.au Re: Patio / Alfresco Cover ? 52Jun 22, 2014 8:21 am [quote="CC101"]and so easy to clean the gutters from inside now. u don't need to go to roof[/quote Hahaha, patio roof falls toward the house roof.... You do need to get on the roof to clean the gutters. To each his own opinion - we like it and like the look of it. We didn't want anything "going through the roof". We've learned from experience that this can cause future problems. So can't agree on this comment. Clearly it does slope towards the house - for "fall" - water has to go somewhere. As we have few trees etc about cleaning is not an issue. We also have filters on downpipes - so again - not an issue for blockage. IMO this comment was made TiC ... But thanks for the comments - although I believe if you have nothing good/nice to say you're probably better off saying nothing. As we haven't seen your "standards" we can't comment on that. Re: Patio / Alfresco Cover ? 54Jun 22, 2014 10:38 am Wow, I really like it. Actually, love it! Colours and all! Didn't read the whole thread, just the title caught my attentino as we are still to build our pergola which would also face north / north-east. We are still firmly set on the light weight "plastic-ey" (?? forgot the name!!! ) sheets, probably those which have white-ish tint (not clear). So anyway, can you tell me how do you find your access to sun, now that the roof is not transparent? Does the sun still enter the house in winter and for how long? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Patio / Alfresco Cover ? 55Jun 22, 2014 11:04 am Lex Wow, I really like it. Our aspect is due north. We are in Qld. Colours - as you see. Just to set the scene ... We had a few restrictions due to building/block envelope and house size (already). We thought we might need a relaxation - but no. Sheets are metal (aluminium ?). We got the wooden post to match the furniture. But - as we also got the larger wall support we did not need the middle post - which helps the view. Our main aim was to stop the sun (its quite hot in the sun) and rain (wetting the furniture etc). But, so far so good. Got 3 or 4 mm last night and it did well. It has a "hidden" drain to existing drains. We weren't sure about how it would look and if it would just look like a "carport" - no disrespect to carports... But - as it is at the back - and we have only one post - it literally can't be seen from any direction - unless you're across the back and then you only see the roof line. From inside you can't really see the roof - unless you're almost at the window/doors. It looks good imo - from underneath. It adds a "nautical" look to the place imo - ie not just another roofline - and fits in well with our environment. The gap along side and back - over roof - allows air to circulate - so not "holding" of hot air. We were looking at "sails" - but feel this is much better. Re your question on sun. In winter - now (if you can call this winter ...) we still get some warming sun in the morning - but not what we got during the day. We found we weren't using the chairs in the window - glorious view - because of the sun. BUT - in summer - the sun will be a lot higher and won't come in. As I said we look directly north. We couldn't sit there in summer - it was too hot. Even with air/con the sun would get you. So we're looking forward to this summer. Outside it seems to mottle the light. Especially at drinks time - eg 4pm ... In summer we hope this will mean no direct sun. The pool reflects off the ceiling - to a degree - and really adds to the overall affect. As I said - we're happy with it. And love the way it matches the house. Also protects the outside furniture. No bringing in the cushions etc etc every time it rains. We also looked at transparent but felt this would stain and colour over time. Louvers - great - but so expensive. Sails - didn't really like the look or the fact they didn't really do what we wanted. Full roof - maybe - but again expensive and would really close the area in. Also might trap air in summer. Time will tell. Good luck. I think it looks fantastic - we'll have 2 or 3 north facing windows - but won't be able to afford something like this anytime soon! Thanks guys. Yes - cost is such a factor. We really had to think about this and meet both what we could afford and what the "rules" allowed ... Possibly "cost" us a few other things we'd have liked. We had quotes that doubled what we paid. Agree on the other too - when we were building we had a few ideas and went to a few people. One spent so much time slagging his competitors we just gave up on him. Praise your own and say why you are better by all means - but don't criticise the opposition. It's just poor form. We just walked away from the one who criticised his opposition. I'm always suspicious of why they feel it is necessary. Re: Patio / Alfresco Cover ? 59Jul 12, 2014 7:38 am Hi Mike, I wasn't slagging your patio at all. I merely stated that the way it has been built is not how I would have built it. I pride myself on quality and delivering the best designs and constructions in the left side of Australia. Fact of the matter is that YOU put it out there and YOU should expect comments both pro and con, for or against. Should you not want any comments, then don't put it out there, simples... Mike, I know that you have been here a long time and commented on a bucketload of posts, I have read many of your comments and have respect for you, however, I am the very best in my field and recognised as such, and I stand behind my comment. The choice of Flat Deck for the roofing is good, the colours are fine and complimentary. The execution of the build is adequate at best. Thanks steve@everlastpatios.com.au www.everlastpatios.com.au Re: Patio / Alfresco Cover ? 60Jul 12, 2014 8:11 am SteveD Hi Mike, I wasn't slagging your patio at all. You have your opinion - I have mine. But - I find if I don't like something someone else does I keep my opinion to myself - unless it is essential to give it. I don't agree with your comments and have received many complimentary comments on the design and the way it fits into the house. I have not seen any of your work so can't comment on it. Your opinion on yourself is interesting. It must be good to be the very best - and know it ! Best leave it at that. We'll just have to agree to disagree. 2 10987 Excellent, thanks for the tip ... not in Sydney, but I might give the Dy Mark a try, cheers 2 1348 |
