Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jan 24, 2014 4:51 pm Hi, Thinking about getting a cantilever umbrella but concerned about their tendency to be susceptible to breezes. Does anyone have an opinion on them? There are some real cheap ones (less than $100) which I am very wary of. It seems like a better brand is Shelta, but don't want to spend upwards of $500 if it flaps around with the slightest breeze. Any advice from someone that has one would be greatly appreciated. Karen Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 2Jan 24, 2014 10:07 pm we've just bought one online today. Won't be able to use it when it's really breezy I imagine. Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 3Jan 25, 2014 10:56 am Hi, The neighbours have 2, and they say they can't put them out if it is windy. Theirs are not fastened down. Then I saw one in use at Sussex Inlet on the coast and I thought the design idea was great, as you can have the shady spot in any relationship to the support. However the users had to sandbag the baseplate very heavily, as the sail has a lot of leverage over the base in a breeze. I believe if I had one I would try to think up some sort of fixing or clamp-down for the base. Cheers Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 4Jan 25, 2014 11:27 am I believe you can get the ones that you concrete the base in to the ground, like the Hill foldaline, where you can remove it from the ground, and put it in the shed/garage when you have a storm coming through. The sand filled bases aren't a bad idea, but if the idea was to move it to another part of the yard, they're too heavy to move. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. It was annoying in the breeze. Not because it would blow over (we had the base bolted to the concrete) but the actual umbrella would swing around and even flip inside out! Our friends now have it beside their spa. When they open it they tie it to the pool fencing so it doesn't blow around so much. It was an expensive umbrella too! That's what I'm worried about HomeAngels, not it blowing over but it swinging around with the slightest breeze. Maybe I'll go with a cheapie & no major drama if it is no good. Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 7Jan 25, 2014 2:19 pm deals direct have basic ones very cheap atm. ( over the weekend) we weren't in the $2 delivery area so it was actually cheaper to buy it from their ebay page than from the site. I'm guessing we'll need a few sand bags. we want to be able to maneuver ours too. Its for shade near our spa for our early morning dips. Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 8Jan 25, 2014 3:14 pm We got a cheap one from bunnings at the start of summer, as the backyard in this rental has no shade. It is awesome when there is not any breeze but it can not be used when there is a breeze. We also got some sand bags to hold down the base, they work well. There was one time the whole contraption blew over, so we are a little more cautious with it. It was worth the $100 we spent, just for a small amount of shade for the kids. I will report back once it arrives to let you know if the quality aligns with the price (I assume it will) Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 10Jan 25, 2014 8:15 pm ko27 yours will probably arrive before ours. Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 11Jan 28, 2014 8:21 am I was hoping to hear good things when opening this thread... not so it seems! We 'want' one with the base like the basketball rings where you can tilt it over and walk it somewhere else... lugging sandbags or chucks of concrete around to plonk on the base doesn't seem much fun. Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 12Jan 28, 2014 8:56 am Unfortunately depending upon the size that you want one of these, they are going to catch a lot of wind and move around unless the base to it is substantial. I think your best option is to see if you can find one that works like the Hills foldaline, where it fits in to a tube concreted in to the ground, and put in multiple tubes in to the ground where you can move it to as required. Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 13Feb 06, 2014 7:56 am I've seen ones in the past that have a water filled base. To fill it you just plug the hose into the top. To empty you plug another hose into the base and empty it over the garden. It may take a bit of time to do but at least you aren't having to lug a couple of 20kg sandbags around if you want to shift it. Those bigger ones need a lot of weight to hold them down in even a moderate breeze. Stewie Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 14Feb 06, 2014 8:44 am we haven't taken ours out of the box yet. This weekend though we will Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 15Feb 11, 2014 4:35 pm Well the umbrella arrived last week & I have set it up & tested it out on the weekend. My initial comment is that it is imperative to have something heavy to weigh it down, otherwise it will lift off the ground with the slightest breeze. I made some sand bags which are doing the job fine to weigh it down. My next comment is that there is no way I would leave it open unattended, as even with a slight breeze the top part does tend to move around a bit. When the breeze started to pick up I was worried whether the pole was strong enough to hold the umbrella up & I'm sure if the breeze was strong enough the pole could potentially snap. Despite all the negative sounding comments, I think it does the job for the price it cost. Whether it lasts, time will tell. Also I don't think it would be very practical if you wanted to move it around (but this is not the case for me). So really comes down to what purpose you need it for & how often you are likely to use it. Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 16Feb 11, 2014 5:38 pm ko27 must agree with all you've said. Only put it together on the weekend. Need to make some sandbags yet. It's pretty reasonable for the price paid. A shame the "ribbon/tie" isn't hemmed as it's fraying badly but otherwise pleasantly surprised for the price. Re: cantilever umbrella- anyone have one? 18Feb 22, 2014 9:02 pm Planning to buy one too for our backyard but I think it's safe to leave it there even in strong wind as long as you fold the umbrella. I've seen some in Harvey Norman Domayne and they're a lot more expensive compared to what you've mentioned here, I think around $1,000 or more, not sure what differs them with other stores. They do have one where you can screw the base to the concrete ground.
